We are seeking a highly experienced senior in-house employment attorney to join our legal team as Managing Counsel, Employment. This role will support Luminar’s human resources team and workforce management across multiple US and global offices, including Germany, Sweden, China, and India.

Responsibilities:

  • Legal Compliance:
    • Stay abreast of employment laws and regulations nationally, in particular in Florida and California, and Germany, ensuring company policies and practices align with legal requirements.
    • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with employment laws.
  • Strategic Employment Advice:
    •    Provide strategic legal advice to senior management on a wide range of employment-related issues, including hiring, termination, employee relations, and workplace investigations.
    •    Collaborate with HR, Recruiting, and other departments to develop workplace strategies and implement best practices for workforce management.
  • Employment Agreements and Stock Compensation:
    •    Draft, review, and negotiate agreements for executives, employees, and consultants, including equity-based incentives, while ensuring alignment with local legal requirements and company policies.
  • Dispute Resolution:
    •    Represent the company in employment-related disputes globally, including negotiations, mediations, and manage litigation when necessary.
    •    Work closely with external counsel as needed.
  • Training and Education:
    •    Develop and deliver training programs for employees and management on relevant employment laws, policies, and best practices.
    •    Keep the organization informed about legal developments affecting employment matters.
  • International Support:
    • Work with inside and outside counsel to develop appropriate policies and practices for global offices.  

     

    Requirements:

  • Education and Experience:
    •    Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
    •    Bar admission in at least one US State, with preference for Florida and California.
    •    Minimum of 12 years of experience as an employment lawyer, preferably with at least 4 years of in-house experience in a technology or startup environment.
  • Expertise:
    •    In-depth knowledge of employment laws and regulations in the US, particularly Florida and California, and internationally.
    •    Proven experience in handling complex employment-related legal matters, including workforce management, hiring and termination, and dispute resolution.
  • Communication Skills:
    •    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    •    Ability to communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders and to present to executives.
  • Team Collaboration:
    •    Proven ability to work collaboratively with a small legal team on cross-functional matters as well as with HR, Recruiting, senior management, and external legal counsel.
  • Adaptability:
    •    Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic startup environment.  Though we are a publicly-traded company, we are rapidly growing with a young workforce, and looking for a roll-up-the-sleeves lawyer.
    •    Comfortable with ambiguity and able to make sound legal judgments on her/his own in challenging situations and to adapt quickly to changing needs.

    At Luminar, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. This role pays a base between $150,000.00 and $200,000.00 per year. Within this range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. You will also be eligible to receive other benefits including: equity in the form of restricted stock unit awards, comprehensive medical and dental coverage, 401k plan, life and disability benefits, flexible time off, paid parental leave, and tuition reimbursement for formal education related to advancing your career at Luminar.
