Managing Editor - Copyediting | Lonely Planet
*This role requires a hybrid schedule based in our NYC Office (Tuesday through Thursday) and work fully remotely on Mondays and Fridays each week.
Lonely Planet, a leading travel media company, is seeking a Managing Editor of Copyediting to oversee copyediting operations across both print and digital platforms. This is a senior management role reporting to the Editorial Director, Destinations.
The Managing Editor of Copyediting will lead a cross-platform editorial function that is critical to ensuring the consistency, accuracy, and quality of Lonely Planet content across all products, including guidebooks, the website, and app. The role includes direct management of an editorial team, oversight of a large freelance network, and ownership of copyediting standards and processes.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in editorial leadership, cross-platform publishing, and workflow management. They will demonstrate expertise in editorial quality assurance, content management system integration, and team development.
What You'll Do:
- Lead and mentor two Senior Editors, ensuring alignment with Lonely Planet standards and team development goals
- Manage freelancer networks across print and digital, including hiring, performance oversight, and budget accountability
- Oversee and continuously improve editorial workflows to ensure efficient delivery and quality control across all products
- Maintain and evolve Lonely Planet style guides and training documentation
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to ensure editorial workflows align with CMS functionality and business needs
- Track and report on copyediting quality, performance metrics, and publishing schedule adherence
What We're Looking For:
- Minimum 5+ years of editorial experience, including at least 2 years in a management role
- Experience managing editorial operations across both print and digital platforms
- Proven ability to lead teams and manage large freelance networks
- Strong project management and organizational skills
- Experience working with content management systems (Contentful preferred)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Familiarity with travel or lifestyle media preferred

Compensation
- USA Compensation Range: $100,000 - $130,000*
- New York City Compensation Range: $120,000 - $156,000- if role can be based in NYC *Note actual compensation is based on geographic location, qualifications, and experience.
