MECHANICAL ENGINEER, STARSHIP ELECTRONICS

The Starship Electronics team is responsible for designing an avionics system optimized for high reliability at a low mass and cost. Mechanical engineers on this team develop innovative and effective packaging for the electronics that fly Starship Super Heavy, protecting against the harsh environments of launch vehicle operation and spaceflight.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Own the hardware delivery timeline and success through inception, design, assembly, test, and integration
  • Design packaging solutions for electromechanical assemblies
  • Perform thermal, structural, dynamic, and tolerance analysis for electromechanical assemblies using both hand calculations and finite element analysis
  • Create 3D models and production drawings, and maintain design data
  • Interface with machine shops and production teams to ensure final designs can be produced in accordance with overall project goals
  • Perform failure analysis of components as it relates to thermal, loads, vibration and shock
  • Lead design reviews internally, participate in reviews with suppliers and customers
  • Ensure designs are improving mass, cost, and rate targets using inventive design and manufacturing approaches

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
  • Experience with mechanical or electromechanical design and analysis (professional experience, internships, and significant student project experience qualifies)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Self-motivation with strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency with and frequent use of hand calculations, computer-aided design (CAD), and finite element analysis (FEA)
  • Experience with CAD and FEA software packages
  • Exposure to designing for high vibration and thermally challenging environments
  • Exposure to high volume production designs with a focus on design for manufacturability
  • Demonstrated understanding of structural analysis and failure modes
  • Experience with dynamic, thermal, and fatigue testing of electromechanical assemblies
  • Solid understanding and application of GD&T
  • Experience working with PCB designers and exposure to PCB layout

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Extended hours, weekend work, and travel may be required to support critical project and mission milestones

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:          Mechanical Engineer/Level I: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00/per year   Mechanical Engineer/Level II: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00/per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX.
