Our payment network connectivity includes CHAPS, Open Banking, SEPA, SWIFT and account issuance in 11 currencies. We are principal issuing members of Visa and Mastercard schemes across UK and Europe.

Our regulatory permissions and governance structure are the foundations of our business. We are regulated and supervised as an Authorised Electronic Money Institution (AEMI) in the UK by the Financial Conduct Authority and in the Netherlands by De Nederlandsche Bank.

Summary of the role

The Payment Operations Manager will be accountable for our operating relationships with safeguarding partners (such as JP Morgan, the Bank of England, the Bank of Lithuania) and schemes (such as pay.uk (FPS and Bacs) and SEPA), with a focus on building and managing internal and external stakeholder relationships, enhancing scheme liaison, and supporting regulatory changes within Payment Operations.

The role involves educating and promoting the team's work across the organisation, influencing continuous improvement through automation, and defining robust processing solutions. Collaborating with internal product and technical engineering teams is key to ensure delivery. An equally important aspect of your role is to build and manage relationships with external stakeholders at the scheme level, to ensure that operational solutions remain robust, resilient, and compliant. Modulr has an office-first policy as face-to-face and ad hoc collaboration will maximise our ability to meet our ambitious growth and profitability goals.  In practise we expect our colleagues to be in-office at least 4 days per week.

Specific duties:

You will assist the Head of Payment Operations, and the wider team ensuring they are set up for success, by managing access and client money controls, driving efficiencies, and supporting technical delivery. You will be a key contributor in improving our client experience and promoting excellence.

Work with and support key stakeholders including Treasury Operations; Financial Control; Payment Product Managers; Customer Support and Onboarding; Legal and Compliance and the Leadership team (in particular the CEO, CFO and COO).

In this role you are the ‘lead contact’ for scheme liaison:

  • Represent Modulr as an Operations Committee Representative at Pay.UK meetings and working groups concerning FPS and Bacs.
  • Run our access logs and levels to bank and scheme operational websites and permissions.
  • Manage scheme expectations and communications for bank error recovery projects and act as a key contact for scheme/direct participant escalation.
  • Support scheme assurance committee with documentation including (but not limited to) participant assurance statement and bank reference data code of conduct.
  • Manage scheme testing agenda including (but not limited to) BERTI, MIDEP testing, out of hours cap increase testing, contingency emails/text/call testing.
  • Receive and distribute all scheme reporting to the relevant individuals.
  • Liaise with product managers to ensure improvements are implemented from scheme recommendations.
  • Liaise as required with the payment’s teams at our safeguarding partners.
  • Support migration activities including SUN & sort code registration and management.
  • Support management of the Net Sender Cap (NSC) and Bacs Debit Cap (BDC) and Peak Contingency Value (PCV) to ensure the correct governance and assurance is in place.
  • Be part of the planning process for direct access to SEPA as part of PSD3.
  • There will be a requirement in this role to cover out of hours testing and Incident management which is paid in line with company policy, and business needs.

About you

You will be a self-motivated, proactive, and organised individual with a deep understanding of UK domestic and international payment processing. In this role, you will represent Modulr at various scheme forums and promptly complete all assigned actions and reports.

Key skills and experience will include:

  • You will be an operational payments subject matter expert and ideally have proven at least 3 years’ experience and expertise with payments, reconciliations, or treasury within an operational environment at a regulated business.
  • Working knowledge and operational knowledge of Modulr products/ services (specifically FPS, Bacs, CHAPS, SWIFT, SEPA, Visa and Mastercard).
  • Familiarity with payment scheme compliance, the FCA and EU regulatory framework and be adept in interpreting them into operational best practice.
  • Be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment, be a quick learner, demonstrate drive, be motivated and passionate to implement and supporting challenging change and growth plans.
  • Have exceptional communication skills in all forms (written, verbal, listening), and establish trusting relationships to maintain open communication.
  • Be methodical and organised to ensure a smooth coordination of activities within a timely manner to meet demanding deadlines.
  • Have good attention to detail to ensure reporting and documentation is accurate and suitable for Senior Management, external parties and onwards cascade.
