About the role

As a Principal Software Engineer on our Video Platform team, you will work with other engineering leaders within Crunchyroll to help define the technical direction, architecture, and platform strategy for our Video Platform. You will use your video streaming expertise to solve challenges across the video pipeline, from transcoding through playback. You will establish relationships across Engineering, Program Management, Product, and QA to help guide our technology roadmap to meet our primary goals. 

You will...

• Lead the design, implementation, and delivery of software in ambiguous and complex problem spaces across our Video Platform teams that have a long-term impact on product, technology and architecture.
• Identify major bottlenecks or existing architectural complexity that slows down innovation or poses risks to the business.
• Bring clarity and simplicity when there is complexity
• Set the standard among engineers in the organization for engineering excellence.
• Participate in design reviews, improving product delivery and aligning teams across the organization towards architectural strategies.
• Apply judgment and experience to balance trade-offs between competing interests.
• Establish practices that support our core tenets of excellence in operations, engineering, and delivery.
• Participate in the hiring and interviewing process and act as a spokesperson for the Crunchyroll Engineering team.
• Keep up to date on industry trends by researching and benchmarking new technologies against other solutions in the market.

In the role of Principal Software Engineer, Playback Platform, you will report to the VP of Video Engineering.

We are considering applicants for the location(s) of San Francisco, Culver City, or Dallas. Remote work is also a possibility depending on your experience and location.

The Video Platform teams build the systems that power the most critical Crunchyroll user experience - watching video - across all mobile, desktop, and connected devices. We are passionate about providing the best possible playback experience to our fans. We manage video from ingestion through playback. We strive to provide a scalable playback platform with fault-tolerant services and flexible players that provide our customers with a premium playback experience.

The Pay Range for this position is listed. Actual pay will vary based on factors including, but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Crunchyroll’s Total Rewards offerings for employees.
