About Toast

Our focus is on building the restaurant platform that helps restaurants adapt, take control, and get back to what they do best: building the businesses they love. And because our technology is purpose-built for restaurants, by restaurant people, restaurants can trust that we’ll deliver on their needs for today while investing in experiences that will power their restaurant of the future. We build experiences that help make operating and growing a restaurant and delighting guests easier and scalable. It’s why tens of thousands of restaurant locations love Toast.

A day in the life (Responsibilities)

Toast is building modern, reliable, and scalable web and mobile experiences that power restaurants and businesses of every size—from single-location operators to complex multi-location groups. As a Product Designer focused on Core web and mobile Experiences and the Design System, you’ll shape the foundations: the patterns, components, and interaction models that make our web and mobile experiences cohesive, efficient to build, and delightful to use.

You’ll work across product areas to strengthen navigation, information architecture, common workflows, and system-level UX—while partnering closely with Design System engineering to deliver a robust component library, as well as AI-connected tooling and clear guidance that helps teams move faster with higher quality.

What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)

  • Own core web and mobile UX patterns: Define and evolve cross-product experiences like navigation, layout, tables, forms, settings, permissions, multi-step workflows as well as AI features and interactions.
  • Build and scale the design system: Create and maintain components, patterns, tokens, workflows and guidelines that drive consistency across our web and mobile ecosystem.
  • Enable other teams: Provide consultative support to product designers and engineers adopting system patterns; improve adoption through documentation and enablement, examples, and best practices.
  • Partner deeply with engineering: Collaborate with frontend and design system engineers to ensure components are feasible, accessible, performant, and production-ready.
  • Drive quality across the platform: Lead UX reviews, spot inconsistencies, drive modern tooling and establish standards that elevate usability and visual polish.
  • Champion accessibility: Ensure experiences meet accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG) through design decisions, documentation, automated tooling and QA practices.
  • Use data + research to guide decisions: Pair qualitative insights (research, feedback) with quantitative signals (usage, funnel metrics) to prioritize improvements.
  • Influence roadmap and strategy: Identify foundational gaps, propose system investments, and align stakeholders on sequencing and impact.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Clearly articulate design concepts, experiments and rationale to stakeholders, incorporating feedback and aligning solutions with strategic business goals.

What will help you stand out (Nonessential Skills/Nice to Haves)

  • Restaurant Passion: First hand experience and enthusiasm for the restaurant industry and designing impactful solutions for its unique challenges is something we highly value
  • AI-first mindset and behaviors: As a design team, we’re forward thinking. We bring an AI-first mentality as we design innovative experiences for our customers. Curiosity,  excitement rolling up your sleeves and generating work and systems with this transformational technology is a necessity.
  • Technical-proficiency: There will be days where you’ll be deep in the weeds of tokenization and system configuration (e.g. connecting MCP and AI tools, compliance monitoring etc)
