ABOUT MOSAIC

Since 2021, Purpose has facilitated an Islamic Climate Movement in Indonesia and co-founded the Muslims for Shared Action on Climate Impact (MOSAIC) alongside representatives from Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Muhammadiyah, UGM, and Republika. 

After a successful congress to launch the movement in 2022, MOSAIC co-created a manifesto for islamic climate action which is a set of directives for climate action that can inspire Muslim communities to lead the climate movement in Indonesia. ICM is now focusing its efforts on the following initiatives:

  • Developing pilot projects to showcase Islamic philanthropy as a solution for  climate finance through Sedekah Energi and Wakaf Hutan. 
  • Youth empowerment and capacity building program through Bengkel Hijrah Iklim (BHI)
  • Facilitating the development of a Just Energy Transition Fiqh that can serve as the backbone narrative to a just energy transition campaign. 
  • Public awareness campaign on climate change and its intersection with Islamic values through Umat untuk Semesta. 

MOSAIC requires a coordinator that can help drive the organisation and facilitate processes to become a sustainable and effective organisation, while also coordinating and driving the delivery of projects. 

ABOUT THE ROLE

The MOSAIC Coordinator will be a key leader and manager supporting a community of Muslims leaders, academics, youth leaders, non-profit organisations, and media. This role demands exceptional strength in project management and strategic communications including strategy development, convening, and organizing. The Coordinator is a social learning leader who transcends the boundary of stakeholders to create changes and build impacts.

Reporting to Purpose Indonesia Country Director, the coordinator will deliver on three focus areas: a) Engagement with MOSAIC’s stakeholders, and in particular building a network of proactive and independent hubs, b) Coordinating MOSAIC strategy development and evolution, c) co-developing and coordinating Mosaic projects, including convenings.

One of the long term strategies of MOSAIC is to be a sustainable and financially independent hub, and the success of this will be supported by the Coordinator. This position will also work with impact evaluation and learning lead closely. A collaborative and inclusive approach, alongside a proactive mindset and readiness to work flexible hours, will be pivotal to excelling in this dynamic and impactful role. Creativity is crucial for devising innovative campaigns and initiatives, coupled with the flexibility to adapt strategies in response to evolving community dynamics.

  • Main objective of role: Support the campaign team in Indonesia to coordinate a collaborative/organization that Purpose co-founded. 
  • Reporting to: Purpose Indonesia Country Director
  • Contract type: Freelance Part-time (3 working days per week)
  • Preferred location: Jakarta, Indonesia (negotiable)
  • Location: Remote
  • Travel expectations: The position will require work across Indonesia, a good amount of travel (over 20%) and collaboration with colleagues around the country.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Cultivate and maintain partnership and engagement to enable MOSAIC to effectively deploy project and initiative, including but not limited to:

  • Developed and steward trusted relationships with Mosaic’s stakeholders, including but not limited to the steering committee, members, and external partners. 
  • Ensuring active participation of internal stakeholders, building the connection and coalition, and fostering a shared ownership of Mosaic among these stakeholders. 
  • As part of the stewardship, this position is responsible over internal touchpoints, this might look like a briefing, brainstorming, meetings or a hang out.
  • Working with the Strategic Communications Manager to oversee how resources is allocated across initiatives in ways that is transparent and credible to reflect a broad interest of Purpose and MOSAIC
  • Working with MOSAIC’s stakeholders, external partners, and Purpose’ Strategic Communications Manager to raise the profile of Mosaic to attract engagement and potential funding
  • Support the coordination of the process to formalize MOSAIC into a legal entity with the direction of the steering committee and inputs from members
  • Act as a primary contact for MOSAIC.

Organize convenings across initiatives and within strategic interest of MOSAIC, including but not limited to:

  • Design and coordinate regular convenings that bring together MOSAIC’s stakeholders, collaborators and partners.
  • Engage new individuals and/or organizations whenever necessary based on MOSAIC strategic needs. 
  • Own the troubleshooting responsibility within MOSAIC internal and external relationship-related issues that might arise.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community members, activists, partner organizations, and local leaders.
  • Facilitate outreach efforts to engage diverse stakeholders and amplify MOSAIC’s message.
  • Organize meetings, workshops, and networking events to foster collaboration and support, this might include supporting grant making efforts. 

Evaluation, and Reporting:

  • Prepare regular reports and evaluations to assess impact, identify areas for improvement, and inform future strategies.
  • Share success stories and lessons learned with stakeholders and the broader community.

 

ABOUT YOU (COMPETENCIES / CAPABILITIES NEEDED FOR THE JOB)

  • At least a bachelor degree with 7+ years of experience or Master Degree with 5+ years experience in stakeholders engagement, communication, or campaign.
  • Strong understanding of faith movements (social, environmental, political) in Indonesia and understanding of Indonesian Muslim culture and its intersection with climate change issues.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Indonesian to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders, convey ideas clearly, and advocate for the movement.
  • A people-person leader with a growth mindset. Understand how to use soft skills in leading and developing legitimacy, building agency, and mobilize the stakeholders. 
  • Ability to think strategically, develop clear goals and plans, and execute initiatives that align with organizational objectives.
  • Capacity to proactively adapt to changing circumstances, taking initiative in leading and navigating challenges, and solution oriented.
