Snapshot

The Product Impact team collaborates closely with a wide variety of teams across Google/Alphabet, leveraging Google DeepMind expertise to deploy advanced machine learning algorithms with the goal of improving Alphabet products and services.

For this role, we are seeking a highly motivated Research Engineer to join our team and contribute to groundbreaking research and product deployment in AI for Education and Learning. Our team aims to make fundamental advances to methods in multimodal foundation models for education and to responsibly deploy new experiences and products for learners of all types. We are interested in candidates with demonstrated experience working in cross-functional teams to develop GenAI models and products for Education and Learning.

You will collaborate closely with researchers and engineers across Google, contributing to the development of cutting-edge generative models and translating research into products across Google and externally.

About Us

Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.

The Role

We are looking for a versatile Research Engineer with proven industry experience  building large scale machine learning applications, with expertise in ML infra, data engineering and evaluations, to help us develop and deploy the best models for educational applications.

Key Responsibilities:

You will be conducting product-driven research and applying the most promising approaches and models to high-impact real world problems, by rapid-prototyping initial ideas, and designing and running experiments to evaluate the opportunity. You will gain an understanding of the path from research to production whilst working on real world problems, with the chance to see your work make a difference at Google scale. You’ll be part of a small project team led by Research Engineers and Scientists, with the potential for significant impact in the short term, and close mentorship from the GDM leadership.

You will be developing robust benchmarks and evaluation methods, training multimodal LLMs, integrating models into products, identifying technical problems and proposing solutions, and influencing our technical strategy and roadmap.

About You

We seek out individuals who thrive in ambiguity and who are willing to help out with whatever moves prototypes forward. We regularly need to invent novel solutions to problems, and often change course if our ideas don’t work out, so flexibility and adaptability to work on any project is a must.

In order to set you up for success as a Research Engineer at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • MSc or PhD/DPhil degree in computer science, mathematics, applied stats, machine learning or similar experience working in industry
  • Fluency in Python or C++ and JAX or similar ML framework
  • ML and data engineering experience (e.g. model training / deployment, efficiency optimization, data pipeline design, ML infra)
  • Teamwork mindset: willingness to unblock others and pick up slack

In addition, the following experience and interests would be an advantage:

  • Experience with multimodal LLMs and training techniques (e.g. RL finetuning methods).
  • Productionizing cutting-edge research, taking projects from proof-of-concept to launch
  • Building robust automatic or human evaluations for ML models
  • Passion for applying AI in education; experience with learning science or digital education
