Teamworking for the planet
Everything we do here spins around Plan Zero. So, naturally, the team you’ll be joining plays a gigantic role in making that happen. Here’s how:
Purchasing wholesale power and gas for our customers is the biggest contributor to bills, so a lot of thought goes into how we do it. The Trading Operations & Analytics team plays a key role by implementing hedging strategies to reduce the risk of cost fluctuations and give OVO the secure foundation it needs to support wider change in the UK energy industry.
This role in a nutshell:
With three other analysts, you will work as part of the Trading Operations & Analytics team to ensure that our customers’ power and gas usage is hedged appropriately. Your insight will help us to understand our spending on power and gas in detail, improve our hedging strategies and minimise unexpected moves in P+L. The role involves working closely with Trading Data Science, the Portfolio Manager and the dedicated Energy Tech team to provide data for traders, Middle Office, Finance and Commercial.
Your key outcomes will be:
- Implementing agreed hedging strategies to cover OVO’s wholesale power and gas exposures, creating new processes where required.
- Supporting developers from the dedicated Energy Tech to create a new platform for calculating OVO’s commodity exposures.
- Developing tools to provide clear insight on the performance of wholesale energy trading activity over both past and future delivery periods to support both month end financial accounting and improvements in strategies.
- Maintaining and improving existing automated Python/BigQuery processes running in Airflow.
- Liaising with Pricing, Commercial and Trading Data Science to ensure that the long term demand forecasts reflect OVO’s growth strategy and risk appetite.
- Providing analytical support to other parts of Portfolio Management and the wider Energy team to enable the effective management of a wide range of risks.
Systems: Python, SQL, BigQuery, GCP, Airflow, Github. Tableau
You’ll be a successful Senior Analyst for Trading Operations & Analytics at OVO if you…
- Have a numerate or analytical degree or at least three years’ experience in a numerate or analytical field.
- Have experience with data manipulation in at least one coding language (we work with BigQuery, SQL and Python).
- Like working on a range of projects managing multiple deadlines and are comfortable with changing direction in response to new regulatory, market or commercial priorities.
- Can logically think through the implications of changes and proactively identify associated risks and opportunities.
- Create clearly presented, repeatable work and are always keen to keep improving your coding skills.
- Enjoy gaining a detailed understanding of subject matter and models, being able to explain them simply to people at different levels and support
It would be helpful to:
- Have experience in the UK energy sector, trading or risk management.
- Have used data visualisation software such as Tableau.
- Understand version control and continuous integration software such as Github and Circle CI.
