We are looking for a Senior-level Engineer who is highly experienced with Cloud Infrastructure (AWS) development, integration, and operation. This experience includes working with high-traffic production deployments using Amazon Web Services, so they can join our world-class engineering team, responsible for powering the most critical features of our globally known web site and mobile applications, operating across 43 markets and 22 languages, servicing our 490 million monthly active users.

As a Cloud Engineer you will be at the junction of application, operational, and architectural engineering and design: utilizing a broad set of expertise and skills. You will work with application and operations engineers across the Hotels Engineering team, and in addition internal platform teams, in developing or integrating necessary tooling and monitoring to ensure that the teams can maintain target service level objectives, and facilitate development within the team’s services. You will play an active role in on-going efforts to migrate existing on-premise services into AWS, driving cloud-first best practices. Most of all, you will work with a team of exceptional software engineers, writing and delivering high-quality code.

What You’ll Do:

• Write code: Ship code to production.  Write code that will power production services handling requests from millions of users each day: optimizing operational tasks, creating client-focused features, and delivering developer tooling to help you and the wider team work more efficiently.

• Direct System Design: Understand the underlying architecture upon which our systems run; leverage AWS, open-source, and proprietary 3rd party tools and services to improve efficiency and reliability.

• Empower Operational Excellence: Ensure adequate monitoring and observability to proactively identify and diagnose system degradations and potential problems.

• Platform Evolution: Anticipate, plan, and implement the steady workstream comprising maintenance tasks for the platform infrastructure.

• Facilitate Development: Reduce friction and improve reliability in development, testing, and deployment to production.

• Shape our Future:  Help design and then execute on our technical roadmap.  Work with other dedicated, experienced engineers, to migrate legacy monoliths and on-premises micro-services to cloud-first systems. Help define the foundation for future cloud-first development within the organization.

• Practice Accountability: Participate in periodic on-call duties and ensure that incident root causes are identified, debugged and resolved to prevent recurrence.

Skills & Experience:

• Enjoy a deep understanding of the technology stack, from the application down to the networking layer.

• 8+ years of experience in commercial software development and cloud operations experience

• Strong Java background, including developing and debugging highly-concurrent, high-throughput systems

• Solid foundation in computer science, with strong competencies in data structures, algorithms, and Object Oriented Software Design.

• Fluent understanding of AWS technologies (e.g. CDK, Terraform, EKS, ECS, RDS, Dynamo)

• Strong experience with production Cloud deployments and integrated CI/CD pipelines development

• Experience troubleshooting and resolving performance issues at every layer of the stack

• Experience designing and building well-modeled, client-focused RESTful APIs

• Experience with Kubernetes and Microservices-based architecture

• Experience with datacenter-to-cloud migrations a plus

• Experience with Apache Solr, ElasticSearch, or OpenSearch is a plus

• Experience with Kafka and/or Istio is a plus
