The Community You Will Join: 

Airbnb is seeking a business-oriented Senior Privacy Counsel with deep experience with privacy laws across Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America to join our growing legal team. You will provide expert legal advice on privacy matters, including the implications of new privacy-related regulations and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. 

The Difference You Will Make:

You will play a critical role with our global privacy, cybersecurity legal and Latam legal teams, and work across multiple global teams and regions providing support and advice to Airbnb’s business and product teams, with a focus on Latin American countries. You must have excellent judgment in balancing legal risks with business strategy and a proven ability to learn new areas of law and function independently in a demanding, fast-paced environment. We’re looking for a highly adaptable and collaborative person who can handle ambiguity and rapidly shifting priorities with flexibility, patience, and poise.

A Typical Day: 

  • Monitor, stay up-to-date, and advise on legal and regulatory requirements in Latin America related to data privacy, and support associated compliance strategies.
  • Collaborate with international privacy counsel to provide focused and pragmatic advice on the implementation and impact of privacy laws across Spanish-speaking Latin America.
  • Collaborate with legal colleagues responsible for strategy around our interactions with data protection authorities in Latin American countries to ensure that regulatory requirements are properly incorporated into product development.
  • Provide advice and counsel to our Privacy Operations team on the implementation of privacy compliance requirements related to data subject request process and escalations, and other data governance and data lifecycle management projects.
  • Assist product lawyers, product managers and engineers in evaluating the impact of Latin American privacy laws, regulatory guidance and enforcement actions, and other related guidelines on product features.
  • Conduct privacy reviews to assess the impact of new projects, products, and technologies on user privacy, including those leveraging AI and machine learning.
  • Support Latin American commercial legal teams in drafting and negotiating vendor/supplier and other commercial contracts. 
  • Provide support on a wide variety of privacy issues in Latin American Spanish-speaking countries, including international data transfers, data sharing, third-party privacy risk management, payment processing, insurance, employment, electronic communications, marketing, consent requirements, and cookie compliance.

Your Expertise:

  • Law degree from an accredited law school required.
  • CIPP certifications from the International Association of Privacy Professionals are preferred.
  • 8+ years post-qualification experience, with significant relevant privacy/data protection law experience at a law firm or in-house corporate environment in a multinational organization, preferably in the tech / digital space.
  • Substantive knowledge and demonstrated expertise in privacy and global data protection law.
  • Technical experience or understanding of AI and machine learning concepts are differentiators.
  • Exceptional ability to consistently deliver creative, thoughtful and business-oriented results that appropriately balance growth and risk in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment.
  • Intellectually curious, open-minded, adaptable, comfortable with ambiguity and risk, and excited by dynamic change and solving problems.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and autonomously across different global and Latin American teams while prioritizing competing tasks in a fast-paced, challenging environment.
  • Willingness to work outside of traditional hours in order to collaborate with colleagues based around the world.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, intellectual curiosity, sense of humor, and willingness to grow.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish is essential. Additional languages are an advantage.
