We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer (full-time) to join our Data Engineering team in Berlin. 

You will work closely with the product & engineering managers, product designers, subject matter experts, and cross-platform engineers to bring this mission to reality for Babbel learners.

You will:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define data project requirements and objectives, ensuring alignment with business goals.
  • Accompany the adoption of our solutions from proof-of-concept to production readiness.
  • Add to the evolution of data models that enable high-quality personalized content generation.
  • Develop and maintain scalable, efficient data architectures supporting current and future business initiatives.
  • Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement solutions to optimize data flow and storage.
  • Stay at the forefront of data engineering trends. Introduce innovative solutions and best practices in data processing, storage, and analytics. Evaluate and recommend new technologies to enhance our data capabilities

You are:

  • Enjoying working on user-facing products and language learning is close to your heart.
  • Learning quickly with the help of MVPs and feeling comfortable adapting solutions iteratively according to our learners' and business needs.
  • An ambassador for continuous improvement. You are comfortable to provide and receive feedback.
  • A proactive team player, able to identify dependencies and risks to address them together with your peers.
  • Monitoring and analysing systems health to develop solutions impacting performance metrics.
  • Establishing a good balance between addressing technical debt and ensuring delivery speed.

You have:

  • 3+ years of experience in data engineering with a demonstrated track record in designing and managing large-scale data systems.
  • 3+ years of experience with Python, text-embeddings and vector-based databases.
  • Knowledge of data modelling and how data can be delivered to help with efficient processing of underlying data.
  • Ability to design, plan, drive, and document architectural changes and propose innovative solutions for data engineering problems.
  • Experience with relational (e.g. MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (e.g. DynamoDB) databases.
  • Experience with modern data tools, real-time data processing, and cloud-based systems. Tools including such as AWS Sagemaker, Airflow, Databricks and Snowflake.
  • Experience with serverless and event-driven architectures (e.g. AWS Lambda, AWS API Gateway, AWS Kinesis).
  • Familiarity with the automation of infrastructure deployment and management using tools such as Terraform and CDK.
  • Data governance and management skills, such as defining and enforcing data quality standards, data contracts, data lineage, and data access policies, as well as ensuring data security and compliance
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

Nice to have: 

  • Familiarity with the technical concept and application of Generative AI.
  • Prompt Engineering and LLM Finetuning
