The Data Infrastructure  team at Wayfair is responsible for the core technologies that underlie a cutting-edge ecommerce business and exceptional customer experience, from order processing and logistics optimization to machine learning and AI. Our team is looking for a smart, passionate, and curious manager who is excited to help us scale our database platforms. 

 

With the broad set of technologies we are using and the scale at which our systems operate, you will have the opportunity to utilize your  skills to mentor and develop a team of Database Reliability Engineers to support existing database technologies that are core to Wayfair’s business, and transition them to support the next evolution of the database platforms here at Wayfair.   If you are the type of person who is fascinated by engineering extremely large deployments of high-volume systems, skilled in managing a team of highly skilled engineers, and passionate about operating in a fast paced environment, we should talk. 

 

What You’ll Do

  • Partner with other Database Reliability Engineers to operate a petabyte-scale database environment in a public cloud environment
  • Write clean, high-performance, and well tested, infrastructure code with a focus on reusability.  (Puppet / Python / Terraform / Packer)
  • Utilize a data-driven approach to both direct reports and contracting team management to monitor for performance and execution against the team's objectives
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation 
  • Establish, maintain, and adhere to Wayfair technical standards, policies, and procedures 
  • Recommend and implement infrastructure best practices in alignment with standard SRE principles and provide guidance on system performance and throughput expectations.
  • Support development teams in designing, scaling, and operating production data infrastructure potentially including, but not limited to, CloudSQL, Firestore, Pub/Sub, Kafka, Dataproc, Airflow. 
  • Path finding missions; taking existing platforms at Wayfair and helping move them to the cloud 
  • Leverage software development skills to enable self-service deployment of distributed systems.
  • Participate and manage on-call and production support rotations to support and troubleshoot database issues off-hours and during promotional events
  • Mentor junior engineers to develop the next generation of Wayfair engineering

 

What You’ll Need

  • 5+ years experience with database technologies, or strong familiarity and demonstrated ability to become expert
    • Specific experience with Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL and other relational and non-relational database platforms
  • 3+ years of experience working in public cloud environments, preferably with preference Google Cloud Platform
  • Experience in maintaining automation around infrastructure provisioning utilizing Infrastructure as a Code (preferably Terraform and Puppet)
  • Experience in utilizing Agile best practices for team workload management and prioritization setting
  • Experience in operating in a large scale database environment in an ecommerce environment
  • Knowledge of large-scale distributed systems architecture, design, implementation and performance tuning
  • Experience in modern DevOps/SRE practices such as CI/CD, performance monitoring, chaos engineering & load testing, and incident & problem management
