Senior DevOps Engineer
SumUp helps businesses get paid effortlessly, process orders fast, sell online instantly, and manage money smarter. We build the tools that let merchants thrive and deliver outstanding customer experiences. But we don’t just simplify transactions - we’re reshaping the future of fintech.
Sofia has been the heart of SumUp’s payments platform since day one. For over a decade, our Payments Tribe - made up of cross-functional, autonomous squads - has powered secure, scalable payment processing for card-present and card-not-present (CNP) transactions in 36+ markets, helping millions of merchants grow, get paid, and thrive.
We aren't just simplifying transactions; we’re reshaping the future of fintech. To do that, we need a Senior DevOps Engineer who thrives on scale, automation, and enabling others.
The role:
As a DevOps Engineer, you will play a key role in enabling and scaling one of SumUp’s most critical platforms - the system that processes all card-present and card-not-present payments, reaching tens of thousands of transactions per minute at peak. You will work closely with backend engineers and SREs to design, build, and operate the tooling, pipelines, and infrastructure that allow development teams to ship safely and reliably at scale.
This role is not about owning infrastructure in isolation. Instead, you will enable teams through strong tooling, automation, and best practices, helping us successfully shift infrastructure responsibilities left while maintaining high availability, resilience, and operational excellence.
What you’ll be doing
- Ensure availability, scalability, and resilience of production and development systems
- Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines, enabling fast and safe deployments
- Create tailored tooling that supports developers in running services in production
- Improve deployment strategies, rollout processes, and automation across the processing domain
- Drive Infrastructure-as-Code practices and continuously improve automation
- Strengthen observability, monitoring, and incident response capabilities
- Work closely with developers and SREs to remove infrastructure bottlenecks and promote standardization
What we’re looking for:
- Hands-on scripting experience (Shell) and working knowledge of Python, Go, or similar
- Strong experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or equivalent)
- Solid knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes
- Experience operating and scaling highly available, distributed systems
- Practical experience with CI/CD tools and pipelines
- Experience with monitoring, logging, and alerting in production environments
- Familiarity with automation and IaC tools (Terraform, Ansible, Packer, or similar)
- Experience with Github Actions
Nice to have:
- Knowledge of networking and security best practices
- Experience with databases and messaging systems
- Exposure to Apache Kafka or other high-throughput streaming platforms
- Previous experience in payments, fintech, or regulated environments
- Collaborate with SumUppers worldwide on large-scale fintech products used by millions, based in our Sofia office (office-first setup).
- Access a €2,000 annual L&D budget to attend conferences or advance your career through education.
- Participate in our VSOP program and own a stake in SumUp’s future success.
- Enjoy 25 days of paid leave (increasing with tenure), plus paid vacations for special occasions and a 1-month sabbatical every 3 years.
- Benefit from extra perks like health and life insurance, co-sponsored Multisport cards, childbirth/adoption bonuses, discounts, a referral program, monthly food vouchers, flexible benefits, and more.
Please note: This role requires the right to work in Bulgaria. We are currently not able to support visa applications or relocation for this position at this time.
