Toast is seeking a highly experienced and motivated U.S. Indirect Tax Sr.Manager to join our state and local tax team. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing Toast's U.S. indirect tax strategy, compliance, and reporting functions. This role demands extensive knowledge of U.S. sales and use tax laws and regulations, exceptional team management abilities, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with stakeholders throughout the organization.

 

About this roll* (Responsibilities)

  • US Indirect Tax Expertise: Leverage your in-depth knowledge of indirect tax regulations to develop and execute strategies that ensure compliance with the ever-evolving legal and regulatory landscape across all Toast’s products and services, including Marketplace Facilitator.  
  • Financial Reporting Excellence: Own and manage US account reconciliations for indirect tax accounts, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting that reflects the integrity of our financial processes.
  • Audit Leadership: Lead and manage indirect tax audits and inquiries with precision, ensuring a seamless and efficient process that minimizes financial and reputational risks.
  • Opportunity Identification: Proactively identify and capitalize on indirect tax opportunities, analyzing complex tax issues related to business expansion, systems, and controls, and providing clear, actionable recommendations to mitigate risk.
  • ERP/TAX Engine Transformation: Play a pivotal role in our ERP transformation by driving the efficient operations of our global tax engine ( VERTEX) that supports our ongoing expansion and addresses sales and use tax implications.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, collaborating across multiple levels of leadership to meet and exceed US state statutory and compliance requirements.
  • Training and Development: Design and deliver comprehensive global Sales and Use tax training materials, partnering with key stakeholders to drive the adoption of new processes, requirements, and policies.
  • External Advisor Management: Build and manage relationships with external advisors providing global indirect tax compliance services, ensuring accurate and timely filings that keep us ahead of the curve.
  • Team Leadership: Provide guidance, coaching, and mentoring to your team ( 3 reports), fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • Cross-Functional Projects: Lead cross-functional finance projects and drive process improvements that enhance efficiencies and enable the business to scale effectively across all Toast product offerings and services. 

Do you have the right ingredients*?(Requirements)

  • A minimum of 8+ years of progressively technical indirect tax experience gained in public accounting and/or industry, with deep knowledge of US domestic indirect taxes (Sales and Use Tax, Property Tax) and broad expertise in MarketPlace Facilitators' laws and regulations.
  • SaaS industry experience, with a strong understanding of this space's unique challenges and opportunities.
  • Proven experience successfully leading finance projects and process improvements that increase efficiencies and enable business growth.
  • Experience working across time zones and with team members in various geographic locations, demonstrating your ability to navigate complex, global environments.

Special Sauce*:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or a Master’s in Taxation or LLM
  • Experience with marketplace facilitator laws & Vertex
  • Proven experience managing complex indirect tax issues related to SaaS, FinTech and Marketplace facilitator laws, with material impact on the business
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and Alteryx
  • A self-starter with strong drive, and exceptional analytical, organizational, and communication skills

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills and experience. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions if eligible), equity, and benefits.Pay Range$135,000—$216,000 USD
