New York Magazine is looking for a proactive, operationally-minded individual to join our team as Senior Manager, Operations & Business Affairs. This role will oversee all freelance and vendor relationships and work closely with editorial and legal teams to broker new agreements and ensure that we are maintaining healthy and efficient relationships with our contributors and partners. The Senior Manager, Operations & Business Affairs will develop a deep understanding of New York’s freelance standards and best practices and become the go-to for any questions about how we work with our contributors. The ideal candidate has experience with and a keen interest in the legal framework of editorial agreements, cares about creating systems that ensure freelancers and vendors are paid on time, and has the interpersonal skills necessary to develop trusting relationships with both staff and contributors.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
  • Oversee all freelance payments magazine-wide, ensuring that contracts are signed and contributors are paid in a timely manner.
  • Manage all editorial contract negotiations with contributors, working closely with editorial leadership and the Vox Media legal team to establish terms that suit both the magazine and the contributor.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the magazine’s payment platforms — Coupa and Worksuite — to ensure contributors are being onboarded and paid efficiently. 
  • Serve as the point person between editorial and legal for all questions related to image and story rights & licensing, consulting with the managing editor whenever necessary
  • Understand the magazine’s standard contract terms and consult with editorial leadership regularly to adjust and negotiate as needed.
  • Communicate regularly with our syndication partners to approve when a story can be syndicated or licensed.
  • Serve as the direct contact between contributors, editors, and the legal team
  • Onboarding and offboarding, adding new hires and removing outgoing ones from: internal databases, mastheads, Google groups, etc.
  • Create cross team visibility and help facilitate communication of key initiatives.

 

WHO YOU ARE
  • Has at least 4 years of operations and/or business affairs experience, ideally in media
  • Has experience working in Coupa and/or Worksuite 
  • Enjoys building and improving workflows 
  • Is comfortable working with many people across teams and functions company-wide and generally being the person others come to with a range of questions

PAY TRANSPARENCY

The salary range listed below represents the minimum and maximum base pay for this position at the time of this posting. Final salary offered to the candidate selected for the position will be based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience.
