Role summary

We are seeking an experienced Onboarding Merchant Risk Analyst to join our Checkout Risk team. This role is responsible for conducting comprehensive risk assessments of prospective merchants during the onboarding process, ensuring proper due diligence, and making informed underwriting decisions to protect our organization from financial and reputational risks while supporting business growth objectives.

What you’ll do

Merchant Application Review & Underwriting

  • Review and analyze new merchant applications for completeness, accuracy, and risk factors
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments using internal scoring models and external data sources
  • Evaluate merchant business models, financial stability, and operational legitimacy
  • Make underwriting decisions within established authority limits and escalate complex cases appropriately
  • Document risk assessment rationale and maintain detailed case files for audit purposes
  • Evaluate and approve processing limit increases and account modifications
  • Recommend risk mitigation measures such as enhanced monitoring, transaction limits, or security requirements
  • Ensure merchant compliance with card scheme regulations (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover)
  • Maintain current knowledge of regulatory changes and industry best practices
  • Due Diligence & Investigation

  • Verify merchant business legitimacy through website reviews, business registration checks, and third-party validations
  • Analyze financial statements, bank statements, and processing history from previous providers
  • Investigate merchant ownership structures and beneficial ownership requirements
  • Documentation & Communication

  • Prepare detailed underwriting memos and risk assessment reports
  • Communicate underwriting decisions and requirements to internal stakeholders.
  • Coordinate operations teams on complex merchant setups
  • Maintain accurate records in merchant onboarding systems and case management tools
  • Work closely with Sales, Customer Care and other internal teams.
  • Recommend changes to ensure accuracy and efficiency of Onboarding processes

    Who you are

    Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Business, Economics, Risk Management, or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in merchant underwriting, credit analysis, or risk assessment
  • Experience in payment processing, merchant acquiring, or financial services industry
  • Knowledge of merchant onboarding processes and payment industry regulations
  • Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in underwriting systems and merchant onboarding platforms
  • Advanced Excel skills for financial analysis and risk modeling
  • Knowledge of financial statement analysis and credit assessment techniques
  • Core Competencies

  • Strong analytical and decision-making abilities
  • Excellent attention to detail and documentation skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage high-volume workloads
  • Excellent English – both verbal and written.
  • Excellent Mandarin and Cantonese – both verbal and written.
  • Understanding of various business models and industry risk factors
  • Knowledge of fraud typologies and risk indicators
  • Understanding of card scheme rules and regulations
  • Experience with specific merchant categories (e-commerce, retail, high-risk industries)
  • Experience with automated underwriting systems and risk scoring models
