We are looking for a Research Scientist to join a team to research the development of next-generation information systems and language modeling technologies to power safe and accurate systems for reasoning and accessing information.

The role
Within the team, Research Scientists are encouraged to lead/support a problem-driven research agenda aimed at producing both fundamental and practically applicable technological advances in the ability of organising information and making it universally useful with AI.
The expectation is to conduct novel research in a way that balances a longer-horizon research agendas with short term value for the user on important information needs.
The preferred location for this role is Pittsburgh, but we would also consider Seattle.
Key responsibilities:
- Spearhead the ideation and development of new capabilities of LLM-based systems for search, reasoning, and question answering.
- Partner with research engineers to develop prototypes for new products, and/or work with product groups in Google to identify and implement approaches that AI can be used to improve existing Google products.
- Report results in academic conferences and journals.
About you:
In order to set you up for success as a Research Scientist at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:
- PhD in a relevant technical field or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience in working with machine learning models, especially LLMs, e.g. in evaluating their performance, and improving performance via techniques such as fine-tuning, in-context learning, prompt optimization.
In addition, the following would be an advantage:
- Experience with human evaluation design, running human data collections, and rigorous statistical analysis of performance.
- Experience in systems that use AI or ML in conjunction with human interfaces, databases or knowledge bases, or symbolic AI systems.
- Experience in working with complex application areas for AI, and/or working with engineering teams.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $157,000 - $240,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
