Senior Robotics Test Engineer
Chewy Robotics is seeking a Senior Test Engineer to join our Physical AI team. This role is perfect for an engineer who thrives at the intersection of hardware and software—someone who gets excited by wires, welds, fixtures, firmware, and finely-tuned experiments. You will take full ownership of test infrastructure and instrumentation used to evaluate robotic systems.
As our Lab Owner, you will lead the development of custom mechatronic testbeds, ensure the precision and repeatability of experimental systems, and collaborate cross-functionally with researchers, data scientists, and roboticists. Your work enables publication of datasets that will be used to train the next generation of physical AI models for the world’s robots.
This position is based full-time onsite at the Chewy Woburn Robotics Lab.
What You’ll DoExperimental Systems & Test Execution
- Design and implement mechanical and electrical test fixtures, instrumentation setups, and experimental workcells to replicate warehouse workflows.
- Plan and execute repeatable, high-quality robotics experiments, including human and robot trials, teleoperation studies, and reinforcement learning evaluations.
- Develop, document, and execute test procedures using structured Design of Experiments (DoE) methodologies.
Hardware Design, Fabrication & Integration
- Own the end-to-end lifecycle of lab-built hardware: CAD design, rapid prototyping, machining, PCB bring-up, wiring, assembly, calibration, and validation.
- Integrate custom and off-the-shelf components into robotic systems, including sensors, actuators, cameras, force sensors, and motor controllers.
- Maintain safety and quality standards in lab equipment and test environments, including voltage handling, load-bearing structure assessments, and grounding verification.
Lab Infrastructure & Instrumentation
- Maintain and improve the lab’s instrumentation backbone—motion capture (OptiTrack), LiDAR, wearable trackers, data acquisition systems, and logging pipelines.
- Ensure all experimental stations are instrumented for precision and reliability, with appropriate calibration, safety checks, and documentation.
- Manage physical lab layout and ensure optimal space usage, cable routing, and testbed modularity.
Software & Systems Support
- Develop or extend test automation scripts in ROS2, Python, and C++ to support repeatable, automated trials.
- Work with robotics software engineers to debug, validate, and log ROS2-based data streams in real time.
- Support data ingestion pipelines, ensuring time synchronization, labeling, and integrity of experimental data.
- Bachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or related field.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in a robotics lab or hardware prototyping environment.
- Demonstrated experience designing and fabricating custom hardware systems—both mechanical (e.g. brackets, mounts, test fixtures) and electrical (e.g. wiring harnesses, sensor integration, signal conditioning).
- Strong working knowledge of ROS2, Linux, Python, and C++ for robot system bring-up and test scripting.
- Familiarity with motion capture systems, signal acquisition, calibration workflows, and structured test environments.
- Strong documentation and communication skills; attention to detail in lab processes, configurations, and safety protocols.
- Experience in safety-critical hardware systems, electrical enclosures, or voltage classification protocols.
- Comfort with rapid prototyping tools (3D printing, CNC, soldering, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers).
- Exposure to machine vision (RealSense, stereo cameras) and force/torque sensing.
- A hands-on role with real impact—your work will directly influence the training data that shapes the future of physical AI.
- Access to cutting-edge humanoid robotics systems, sensors, and software platforms.
- Opportunity to work on mission-driven R&D that ties experimental rigor to operational robotics deployment.
- A collaborative culture that values technical ownership, craftsmanship, and curiosity.
- Competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and a front-row seat to the next generation of robotic technologies.
