Airbnb was born in 2007 when two Hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 4 million Hosts who have welcomed more than 1 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, Hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way.

The Community You Will Join:

At Airbnb, our mission is to create a world where anyone can belong anywhere. The Identity Infrastructure team is responsible for securing the foundational platforms and cloud environment that power Airbnb. We provide secure, scalable and verifiable identities to all the entities in our platform (services, nodes, developers etc.).  These identities allow each entity to communicate confidently with each other—and with the cloud—according to well-defined policies and guardrails.

Airbnb is a member of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation’s end user community and regularly meets with peer companies to discuss cloud native engineering challenges at scale.

The Difference You Will Make:

As a software engineer on this team, you'll work with the fundamental infrastructure components that all other teams at Airbnb build upon, such as our compute platform, cloud services, service mesh, cloud provisioning and networking stack. With users around the world, reliability, scalability, efficiency and high availability are our team’s core concerns—and security underlies all of these.

A Typical Day:

  • Build cutting edge cloud native infrastructure on top of the public cloud.
  • Deliver frameworks and platforms that are secure, efficient, mature and highly available that abstract away infrastructure complexity.
  • Investigate and adapt industry best practices to Airbnb’s unique environment.
  • Systematically improve availability by applying industry and distributed systems best practices.
  • Work with other talented and friendly infrastructure and infosec engineers to build the foundation for Airbnb’s technical growth over the next decade.

Your Expertise:

  • 5-9+ years of relevant software development experience with a BS/Masters or 6+ years with a PhD. in a fast-paced, high-growth tech environment.
  • Expertise with a public cloud provider (AWS, GCP, Azure) and their Security, Identity, & Compliance offerings (e.g. IAM, KMS).
  • Experience working with authentication and authorization protocols/frameworks (OpenID Connect, OAuth, LDAP etc.)
  • Passionate about cloud security risks management, secure by default configurations, and blast radius reduction.
  • Familiarity with container and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Track record of working with infosec engineers to solve challenging problems creatively.
  • Strong ownership and experience building and operating high-scale, distributed systems across the full software lifecycle.
