Our Opportunity

Chewy is seeking a full-stack Software Development Manager to join our Site Analytics Engineering team within our Boston, MA hub location. In this unique player-coach role, you will lead a small team that crafts, builds, and maintains the crucial applications and services powering Chewy’s analytics and experimentation platforms. You’ll partner closely with our Storefront engineers and multi-functional Team Members to ensure detailed integration and high performance across web and mobile platforms. This key team  currently owns the building and maintenance of our data and analytics infrastructure; we empower our Team Members with high quality data services, behavioral (Clickstream) event tracking, and experimentation (A/B testing) platform capabilities. As dynamic and forward-thinking leader of this org, you will help define the technical direction of our event-driven analytics platform and grow your team through the development of scalable, reliable backend systems that enable actionable insights and measurable business impact.

What You’ll Do
  • Manage a team that is designing, building, and maintaining scalable backend systems, APIs, and microservices that enable Chewy’s internal clickstream analytics, experimentation, and data platforms.
  • Develop and operate event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka to support real-time data collection, streaming, and integration, ensuring data accuracy and consistency across analytics pipelines.
  • Architect and lead cloud infrastructure on AWS in partnership with DevOps, with an emphasis on scalability, high availability, fault tolerance, and disaster recovery.
  • Implement robust, fault-tolerant data services that ingest, process, and deliver trillions of daily events to downstream systems, supporting operational dashboards, reporting, and experimentation frameworks.
  • Guide your team to automate infrastructure provisioning using Terraform and Git-based workflows to deploy scalable, containerized applications. Champion infrastructure-as-code standard methodologies across the team.
  • Ensure reliability and performance of critical services through observability (e.g., Datadog, Grafana), active monitoring, and resolution of performance bottlenecks in high-throughput environments.
  • Implement secure authentication and authorization mechanisms, including SSO, RBAC, IAM policies, secrets management, and vulnerability mitigation.
  • Collaborate multi-functionally with frontend engineers, data engineers, data scientists, and product managers to understand requirements and translate them into backend solutions aligned with Chewy’s business goals.
  • Drive an engineering environment that prioritizes technical excellence and continuous improvement through documentation, mentorship, and partnership, while upholding Chewy’s standards for data security, compliance, and partner trust.
  • Crafting innovative technical ideas (e.g., why a unified metric needs a certain definition, or how a new infrastructure change will reduce latency) to both technical and non-technical partners.
What You’ll Need
  • 6+ years of professional backend software engineering experience, building and contributing to the design or architecture of large-scale systems in data-intensive environments.
  • 2+ years of experience directly managing backend or full-stack engineers, with a track record of building and delivering high-impact platform solutions.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science (or similar math/engineering subject area) or equivalent professional work experience.
  • Proficiency in Java or Kotlin, with a strong understanding of building high-scale distributed systems and microservices.
  • Experience building and deploying containerized applications and services using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Expertise in event-driven architecture design with a focus on scalability and fault tolerance.
  • Hands-on proficiency with Apache Kafka or similar event-streaming platforms.
  • Strong proficiency with AWS services such as EC2, ECS, CloudWatch.
  • Knowledge of modern data stores and query engines including Snowflake, Databricks, Azure, or Amazon Redshift.
  • Experience with Terraform and observability tools such as Datadog, Dynatrace, CloudWatch, and Grafana.
  • Previous work building data platforms, experimentation frameworks, or site analytics in a high-growth or e-commerce setting.
  • Proficiency in SQL databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) for schema design, query optimization, and data modeling.
  • Nice to have: Frontend development skills using TypeScript/JavaScript.

Join us to build foundational systems that power Chewy’s data-driven decisions and elevate our customer experience through analytics and experimentation!
