Software Engineer - Engineering Experience

Full Time
London, UK

Wise is one the fastest growing companies in Europe and we’re on a mission: to make money without borders the new normal. We’ve got 16 million customers across the globe and we’re growing. Fast.

Current banking systems don’t let us send, spend or receive money across borders easily. Or quickly. Or cheaply.

So, we’re building a new one.

We need a mid-level software engineer to join our mission and help us build a global platform that’s scalable, reliable and secure. You’ll dive right into projects related to our Developer Portal (built on spotify backstage) creating a single pane of glass for our engineers to interact with our technical estate.

About the role

We are looking for a software engineer with a passion for enabling engineers to be their best.

Our team, Engineering Experience, is part of the Developer Enablement Squad.

We focus on engineers and try to make continual improvements in 2 areas: productivity and culture. Those are pretty vague concepts, so let’s break them down:

  • On productivity, our vision is “Empowering teams to ship at the speed of a startup, with the security and compliance of a bank”; we want to get to the point where our engineers have a rock solid platform and seamless team collaboration, where they can iterate quickly and ship impactful changes with confidence.
  • Culture is about how we work together to build a sustainable work environment where engineers can thrive. United in our dedication to quality, every idea and tool becomes a step towards new milestones. Our shared ambition fosters an inspiring engineering environment, where we don't just engineer software, we create an environment to shape the future engineering of Wise .

Even for the areas which seem like they aren’t software engineering problems, we believe engineers bring a unique perspective, and there are almost always things which can be helped by an engineering solution!

How we work

We operate on a strong belief in automation, programmatic implementation, and reusable design. We’re looking for people who can step back and think holistically about the ecosystem, but also follow through and help implement the design; drawing on the resources across the rest of the platform tribe.

As we grow, the complexity of the organisation grows and it gets harder to move at the speed of a startup. We need to sustain this growth by continuously iterating on the services we run, with a focus on availability, security, and ease of use. We’re looking for an engineer with relevant experience who can analyse complex requirements and deliver simple solutions to help our teams achieve our mission with speed and confidence.

What will you be working on?

  • The developer portal is the home and landing page for our hundreds of engineers daily. We are building what helps them, what needs their attention and to build a thriving engineering culture and ecosystem.
  • Coaching, mentoring and aiding the WiseStart Academy helping to rapidly upskill and inform our Graduate Engineers displaying how much Wise is proud to have them onboard. Running bootcamps, facilitating workshops and being the go to team for creating an ongoing learning environment.
  • Contributing in user research sessions with Engineers throughout the company. Gathering and taking action on insights to pave the future of engineering in Wise.
  • Exactly what you’ll be doing day to day will vary, as our team looks at the big picture challenges we see across all of engineering!

What do you need?

  • You care about people, care about engineering, and are inspired by our mission to make things better.
  • You’re motivated by understanding the pain points, frustrations, needs, and wants of other engineers and have a desire to significantly improve productivity, culture and how much they love working here.
  • You’re good at communicating, comfortable engaging with other teams to get things done, and willing to present to other engineers occasionally.
  • You think of yourself as a full stack engineer and able to program in one of our team's tech stacks (Java, GoLang, TypeScript, Python).
  • You want to learn more than one programming language and understand shared concepts such as OOP and design patterns.
  • You love pairing with team mates.
  • You have experience working with relational (RDBMS) and NoSQL databases - but you do not need to be an expert.
  • You’re a keen tester. You love unit testing and understand the testing pyramid.
  • You’re confident delivering smaller stories or more complicated tasks.
  • Bonus - You have a good eye for design. Any Figma experience and UX experience is a great addition.
You get back:
  • The ability to choose your own path to success – you’ll have the freedom to define the vision
  • The freedom to have real impact
  • The opportunity to inspire teams
  • A fun work environment with social activities and events
