Overview

The Legal Technology team at Wayfair partners with the business to solve problems, launch new initiatives, and balance risk while facilitating global growth.  In order for Wayfair to be able to operate effectively, the Legal team needs dedicated resources (engineering, product, data science) to build tools and automate processes that will scale with the business.  This team helps reduce the time spent by our Legal and Merch Compliance teams on low value-add, repetitious, and manual tasks. We need to be proactive in identifying potential issues in order to comply with laws and regulations to stay ahead of adverse financial, operational or reputational impacts to the business. 

Scope

Legal Tech has a broad scope that covers many verticals beyond what is listed below.  We are currently focused on two main areas and plan to expand in the future:

  • Product Diligence: We are building processes and tools to improve the quality of our products. All suppliers are required by law or by Wayfair’s standards to not only meet those rules and regulations, but in many cases to provide proof.  Our services are integrated within the entire product lifecycle: verifying new products, updates to existing products and scanning our existing catalog if new regulations are introduced.  There are numerous high risk categories that we are focused on now that will continue to expand: youth (cribs, bunk beds, etc.), hazardous goods (lithium batteries, coolant, etc.), composite wood, etc. Verifying these products not only protects Wayfair, but more importantly, our customers that purchase these products.
  • Supplier Diligence: Wayfair is a platform that allows furniture suppliers to sell their products to the end user customers on our site.  We are onboarding new suppliers and need to verify existing suppliers with new requirements.  There are for main areas we are focused on now:
  • Is the business information provided accurate and can we verify that it is a legitimate business (Know Your Business - KYB)?
  • Is there a representative of the business that we can verify is associated with this business (Know Your Customer - KYC)?
  • Is the bank and payment information accurate and verifiable?
  • Does this supplier have insurance that meets our requirements?
  • As mentioned above, these are the areas that we’re currently focused on, but there are multiple other verticals within Legal that we need to expand into: corporate security, privacy, real estate, customs, etc.

     

    Responsibilities:

    • Work cross-functionally with different roles and teams, such as product management, core areas of the business, and other engineering teams to understand the problems we need to solve, and solution against them in a globally distributed environment.
    • Own the entire platform's architecture and help make decisions to drive the technology platform and roadmap for the team to ensure current and future scalability and performance - you'll be helping us solve some complex architectural problems!Implement and advocate for engineering best practices, helping level up the engineers inside and outside your team
    • Demonstrate the drive to improve the team at every step, whether it's leveling up your or the team's knowledge, making process improvements, or rearchitecting our platform for the next level of scale
    • Lead technical debate and decision making ensuring no-regret decisions with appreciation for trade-offs
    • Nurture collaborative ways of working that grow the team, its members and the product: testing practices, TDD, pairing/mobbing, continuous deployment, domain-driven design
    • Influence and contribute to the technical and product strategy and roadmap

    Requirements:

    • 6+ years experience in Software Engineering with designing and building large scale platforms.
    • Experience leading/supervising and/or mentoring engineers, leading code reviews, and establishing best engineering practices.
    • Passion for leading cross functional projects through collaboration and influencing design decisions.
    • Deep understanding of modern programming languages such as Java, Python, PHP, C#, Go, Scala, or similar languages.
    • Ability to develop creative solutions with customer experience and scalability on top of mind. Experience developing microservices in highly available and large scale distributed systems.
    • Experience deploying solutions into production within GCP, AWS, Azure or similar cloud platforms
    • Experience in developing and deploying services/applications in Kubernetes (K8s) Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders alike.
