The role

The GDM AI Platform organization is on a mission to accelerate AI research within GDM by removing friction points faced by researchers developing foundational models. 

As the performance of AI models keeps improving, it is becoming clear that our main differentiator will come from our training data, and GDM is making significant investments to ensure we are in the lead in the AI data space. Google and GDM have some of the most unique datasets on the planet, and we are naturally positioned to become the market leaders in AI data.

As we expand our London team, we are looking for a talented TL  excited to work with some of the most brilliant AI researchers on the planet.

Your responsibilities as a people manager, you will be expected to:

  • Manage a small team of about 2-3 data engineers initially
  • Support your team in their career growth
  • Mentor them in their daily projects
  • Ensure that the team delivers on their projects in a timely manner
  • Communicate progress extensively with the leadership team
  • Escalate issues to unblock your team
  • Ensure that the team delivers on its objectives and key results.

In addition to your managerial role, we expect you to lead by example and display strong technical abilities: 

  • Act as a technical lead for several high-visibility  projects
  • Have a solid understanding of best practices in data engineering
  • A consistent track record of delivering complex projects in cross-team settings
  • Any experience with human data collection (ideally in the context of RLHF) would be a major plus
About you

In order to set you up for success as an Tech Lead at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • Experiment managing and mentoring more junior engineers
  • Solid communication capabilities
  • Proven experience in data engineering (ETL)
  • Strong experience with data orchestration in a large-scale production environment
  • Strong coding skills (C++, Python)
  • Familiarity with synthetic data generation
  • Experience with Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)

In addition, the following would be an advantage: 

  • A solid understanding of RLHF
  • Experience with human-in-the-loop data collection
  • Experience with ML model deployment and serving
  • Experience building solutions specifically targeted at ML researchers
  • An ability to collaborate with other teams
  • A product-oriented mindset
