At Databricks, we are passionate about enabling data teams to solve the world's toughest problems — from making the next mode of transportation a reality to accelerating the development of medical breakthroughs. We do this by building and running the world's best data and AI infrastructure platform so our customers can use deep data insights to improve their business.

We see the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform as the future of data-driven decision-making. Our Applied AI team is at the heart of the engine that powers this future. We’re making the Databricks product smarter, faster, better, and generally more magical. We use Generative AI (both internal and external LLMs) and predictive AI to make Databricks Assistant, Search, coding experience, automatic documentation, and other user-facing features the best they can be. We are passionate about the quality of these AI-powered features, and improve on them via LLM fine-tuning, improving Retrieval Augmented generation (RAG), and the broader gamut of machine learning algorithms and evaluation strategies. On the Applied AI team, we are basically working on the future of data intelligence, and looking for a manager to support these initiatives. We have built a team, so this would be a great opportunity for learning and growth.

You will report directly to the Senior Director of Engineering.

The main responsibilities include:

  • You will lead a team of accomplished AI engineers to help build intelligent features for Databricks such as the Assistant, Search, coded completion, automatic documentation, and others.
  • You will continue the growth of the team by attracting and hiring top talent.
  • You will lead technical discussions and driving decisions related to applied AI, particularly around LLM and predictive ML algorithms and infrastructure.
  • You will manage and operate multiple highly-available AI features in the cloud.
  • You will grow leaders on the team by providing coaching, mentorship, and growth opportunities.
  • You will play a key role in defining the product and engineering roadmap for the team
  • You will partner with other engineering and product leaders on planning, prioritization and staffing.
  • You will create a culture of excellence on the team while leading with empathy.

What we look for:

  • 5+ years experience building applied AI/ML systems such as search, recommendations, and conversational agents.
  • Experience improving the quality of such AI/ML systems iteratively via sound statistical methods.
  • Experience with building and managing teams.
  • Knowledge of AI systems on the cloud.
  • BS in Computer Science or related field (Masters or higher).
