Staff Software Engineer - Customer Identity Access Management

The Customer Identity Access Management team (CIAM) is responsible for building solutions that enable Fastly customers to securely collect, organize and manage their users' identities and profile data from one centralized place. We help our customers control their users' access to applications and services within their organization by offering seamless access control mechanisms, advanced authentication methods, progressive profiling, and a consolidated identity.

We are looking for a highly motivated full-stack staff software engineer to join our team. You will work on functional areas including role based access control, SSO, and SAML.  We are a mixed Ruby/Go shop, so you will have a chance to learn or continue your skills with our current GoLang IAM application.  For API features that require user interfaces, you will work with Typescript and React to build solutions that delight our customers. You will also work on the evolution of our services, with attention to collaboratively designing data and service boundaries that are scalable and fault tolerant. If you’re passionate about developing innovative solutions to complex problems, and you thrive when building a positive and collaborative environment, we encourage you to apply for this role!

What You'll Do:

  • Lead the design, development, deployment, and maintenance of the applications that involve the customer Identity and Access Management (CIAM) systems and solutions
  • Collaborate with engineers across the entire organization to leverage our authorization and authentication strategy and implementation.
  • Own features from start to finish, facilitating review and discussion with peers and partners, and ensuring features as implemented meet product requirements
  • Partner with your engineering leaders to build out and execute on everything from project design to engineering and security standards
  • Clearly communicate upward and outward to set and adjust expectations with your manager and partners
  • Participate in on-call rotation

What We're Looking For:

  • Hands-on experience developing complex applications in Go and/or Ruby. Most Senior Engineers at Fastly have at least 7 years of relevant coding experience.
  • Front end development experience with React and TypeScript
  • Strong understanding of service-oriented architectures, microservices, and design patterns
  • Familiarity with authentication standards and technologies such as JWT and OIDC.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and ability to produce quality documentation.
  • A great teammate: communicative, collaborative, empathetic
  • You have experience working with teams distributed across different time zones
  • Experience in Service-to-service communication

We’ll be super impressed if you have experience in any of these:

  • Hands-on experience with CIAM solutions such as SSO, SAML, OAuth and SCIM
  • Microfrontend architecture
  • Experience building authentication and authorization products, especially authorization frameworks for applications (preferred distributed systems)
  • Experience in Security-focused products, Rate Limiting, DDoS mitigation, etc.

Work Hours:

  • This position will require you to be available during core business hours and occasional nights and weekends as required for the on call rotation.

Work Location(s) & Travel Requirements:

This position is open to both hybrid and remote candidates. Preferred hybrid locations for this position are:

  • San Francisco, CA
  • New York, NY
  • Denver, CO

Fastly currently embraces a largely hybrid model for most roles which allows employees flexibility to split their time between the office and home.  We will consider highly qualified remote candidates in the United States.

This position may require travel as required by your role or requested by your manager.

Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance and the Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.

Salary:

The estimated base salary range for this position is $181,220 to $226,520.

Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location.

This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly’s equity and discretionary bonus programs.
