About the job
This position is needed to build and support Segment’s Container Runtime platform.
As a Staff Platform Engineer on the Infrastructure Compute Runtime team, you will be focused on building and developing a Kubernetes platform with a strong emphasis on reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency. You’ll also be responsible for mentoring, sharing knowledge, and guiding the technical decisions of the team to set us up for long-term success, both as a product and as a team.
Responsibilities
In this role, you’ll:
- Build the next generation of container orchestration platform building blocks that enable internal teams and customers to unlock value from their data
- Build globally available and highly scalable distributed systems
- Collaborate with teams across the R&D org to ensure their services are multi-region capable
- Mentor other engineers on the team on technical architecture and design
- Participate in driving Segment as a market leader in the development of Open Source Software
- Participate in an on-call rotation to support our business-critical infrastructure

Required:
- 6+ years experience building and operating large-scale production systems.
- Deep expertise in architecting, building, and operating distributed container orchestration systems such as Kubernetes, Mesos, or Docker Swarm
- Expertise in Linux internals, TCP/IP, DNS, Cloud Load balancing technologies
- Deep understanding of architectural patterns of high-scalability distributed systems
- Have led cross-functional teams, large projects, or owned and built an important, complex system
- Proficiency in IaC, Kubernetes, and AWS concepts, best practices, and tools
- Solid problem-solving skills, proactive attitude, and ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team environment.
Desired:
- Experience in writing production-grade code in a modern programming language
- Proficiency in optimizing cloud infrastructure and compute costs
- Experience building out and supporting GPU-powered K8s clusters to support our gen-ai mission
Location
Travel

The estimated pay ranges for this role are as follows:
- Based in Colorado: $164,480.00 - $205,600.00.
- This role may be eligible to participate in Twilio’s equity plan and corporate bonus plan. All roles are eligible for the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave.
The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location within the state.
