About the Team

The Photon team at Databricks is part of the broader query processing team. Our mission is to build the next-generation polymorphic execution engine. This engine retains the flexibility and expressiveness of Spark to support not only SQL but also data science/eng workloads. Photon team works towards building engine features that help Databricks achieve/retain Price to Performance advantage against other specialized data warehouse query engines.

The Impact you will have:

• Solve real business needs at large scale by applying your software engineering expertise.
• Deliver a highly scalable, available, and fault-tolerant engine, processing hundreds of PBs of data daily across thousands of customers.
• Low level systems debugging, performance measurement & optimization on large production clusters.
• Build architecture design, influence product roadmap, and take ownership and responsibility over new projects.
• Use your deep experience to help prevent and investigate production issues.
• Plan and lead ambiguous technical projects that work with several teams within the company.
• Contribute as a Technical Team Lead by mentoring others, leading sprint planning, delegating work and assignments to team members and participating in project planning.

What We Look For:

• BS in Computer Science, related technical field or equivalent practical experience
• Optional: MS or PhD in databases, distributed systems
• Comfortable working towards a multi-year vision with incremental deliverables
• Motivated by delivering customer value and impact
• 5+ years of production-level experience in either C++, Java and Scala
• Strong foundation in algorithms and data structures and their real-world use cases
• Experience with database internals, distributed systems and big data systems (Spark, Hadoop)

Pay Range Transparency

Databricks is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The pay range(s) for this role is listed below and represents base salary range for non-commissionable roles or on-target earnings for commissionable roles.  Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to job-related skills, depth of experience, relevant certifications and training, and specific work location. Based on the factors above, Databricks utilizes the full width of the range. The total compensation package for this position may also include eligibility for annual performance bonus, equity, and the benefits listed above.
