The Backend Language Tooling Team is responsible for empowering product engineers to focus on delivering business value by establishing & implementing reliable, safe, efficient, secure standards for development across all of Lyft. We are heavy users of Python and Go, and own the language implementation ecosystem around builds, dependency management, and release flows.

As an engineer on the Backend Language Tooling Team, you will be responsible for backend language implementation, execution environment, and dependency management for libraries and applications. You will partner with hundreds of engineers across the company to champion best practices, support and contribute to industry standard tooling, and meaningfully improve the experience of using backend languages at Lyft. Our goal is to provide a seamless development experience across all projects.

Responsibilities
  • Drive the team's long term roadmap by setting technical direction and maintaining quality for a team of 5+ engineers 
  • Own large multi-engineer initiatives from idea through successful execution
  • Work with product engineering teams to understand their use cases and design and build systems to make them more productive
  • Champion best practices for building and deploying Python and Go services at scale
  • Integrate industry standard tooling across Lyft such as code linters, static analyzers, type checkers, and auto-formatters.
  • Collaborate with our partner teams to integrate our tooling into local development and CI workflows
  • Automate large-scale code changes and dependency management to ensure our ecosystem stays current with new technologies
  • Write well-crafted, well-tested, readable, maintainable code
  • Level up those around you with individual mentorship and teach others with tech talks and deep dives
Experience
  • 8+ years of software engineering industry experience
  • Deep experience with the Python and/or Go language ecosystem including dependency management, linting, and coding standards
  • Strong familiarity with container technology such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Take pride in reducing technical debt; attention to small details and keeping code/configuration clean and maintainable is something you value
  • Proven track record of setting technical direction for a team and successfully delivering value
  • Value root causing operational issues and implementing systemic solutions and automation to make sure they no longer happen

Starting in September 2023, this role will be in-office on a hybrid schedule — Team Members will be expected to work in the office 3 days per week on Mondays, Thursdays and a team-specific third day. Additionally, hybrid roles have the flexibility to work from anywhere for up to 4 weeks per year.

The expected range of pay for this position in the New York City is $180,000 - $215,000. Salary ranges are dependent on a variety of factors, including qualifications, experience and geographic location. Range is not inclusive of potential equity offering, bonus or benefits.
