Technical Accountant Manager

Our Global Finance organization plays a critical role in enabling SumUp’s growth by ensuring high-quality financial reporting, strong governance, and consistent accounting practices across the group. As our business continues to scale and evolve, maintaining a robust, well-documented IFRS framework is essential.
As a Technical Accounting Manager, you will act as a subject matter expert for IFRS across the group, partnering closely with Controlling, Accounting, FP&A, Legal, and senior finance leadership. This is a high-impact individual contributor role, combining deep technical expertise with strong stakeholder engagement and a mandate to build scalable accounting governance.
What you’ll do Technical Accounting & IFRS Leadership-
Lead the interpretation and application of IFRS across the group, ensuring consistent and accurate accounting treatment for complex and non-routine transactions.

Perform technical accounting research and prepare well-supported position papers, advising on alternative accounting treatments and their implications.

Support the controlling and accounting teams in analyzing complex transactions and documenting accounting positions.

Review significant contracts and strategic initiatives, assessing accounting implications and advising stakeholders accordingly.

Benchmark competitor disclosures and market practices to ensure alignment with evolving reporting standards and best practices.

Own the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the Group Accounting Manual.

Design, prepare, and update IFRS-compliant accounting policies, supporting Global Process Owners and finance teams through implementation.

Publish technical guidance and policies through a dedicated Notion-based technical accounting library.

Establish and manage Jira workflows to govern the creation, review, approval, and publication of accounting guidance.

Collaborate cross-functionally with Accounting, Controlling, FP&A, Tax, Legal, Treasury, and business teams to ensure consistent application of accounting policies.

Act as a key technical counterpart for external auditors, supporting audits and responding to technical accounting inquiries.

Provide on-demand written guidance and clarifications to finance teams across the group.

Support onboarding of senior accounting and controlling colleagues by accelerating their understanding of SumUp’s accounting framework and operating model.

Design and deliver periodic training sessions for Accounting and Controlling teams on new or updated IFRS guidance and internal policies.

Ensure global finance teams understand when and how to escalate technical accounting questions.

Identify inefficiencies in technical accounting governance and propose scalable improvements.

You have 10+ years of relevant experience in accounting, controlling, or financial reporting within complex, multi-entity organizations.

You bring hands-on experience as a Technical Accountant or Technical Accounting Manager.

You have deep knowledge of IFRS and strong exposure to monthly and annual reporting cycles.

You are confident preparing technical accounting memos, interpreting standards, and advising on judgment-based topics.

You have experience working closely with auditors and supporting audit processes.

You hold a Master’s degree in Accounting or Finance.

You are fluent in English, with strong written, presentation, and stakeholder communication skills.

You are a hands-on, detail-oriented professional who enjoys balancing technical rigor with business pragmatism.

You thrive in fast-paced, evolving environments and are comfortable navigating ambiguity.

ACCA, ACA, or CPA qualification

Experience with internal control frameworks or regulated environments

Exposure to AI-powered accounting research tools (e.g. DART, PwC Inform)

Experience building or scaling technical accounting governance frameworks
