⭐Our Risk & Compliance teamWe are bringing a modern approach to technology which can unlock incredible value for our customers. That means deploying 100 times a day to production, rather than once per quarter. That means automated testing rather than manual testing. That means building our core banking system in-house. That means building on cloud technology rather than on premises. That means being tolerant of hardware failure (and indeed inducing failure!), rather than trying to prevent it. 

However, we are still a bank and the custodians of our customers' money, who often trust us with their livelihood. We have so many customers now that we are a systematically important bank. Especially when using new techniques as we are, it is important that all these systems and processes are working as intended and not creating any undue risks for us or our customers. 

So we’re looking for somebody with first-hand experience in building things in this way to provide oversight and assurance to our Chief Risk Officer (CRO).As our Technology Oversight Risk Director, you’ll be managing a team to support our risk oversight teams.  Most of our processes and controls are driven by data and technology.  To know if they are working well, we really need to understand how the data and technology are operating.  Your team will work alongside risk and compliance subject-matter experts to understand the implementation of processes and controls in Monzo systems.  You’ll help us ensure they operate effectively and find opportunities to manage risk more efficiently.

The impact of this role is company-wide so you’ll be working closely with our CTO alongside building strong partnerships with Platform,  Engineering and Data teams across the business to support embedding of risk management policies and procedures, real time risk management and progressive technological control. You’ll also provide objective assurance and oversight over Monzo’s technology, information security and data management risk and control landscape to ensure Monzo achieves its mission and keeps its customers safe.

🔑You’ll play a key role by…

  • Sitting on our Risk & Compliance Leadership Team, and supporting our Chief Risk Officer manage technology risk and projects that have an impact across the business
  • Supporting the design, implementation and operation of Monzo’s risk management frameworks, including the embedding of key Risk Framework activities, (e.g.  Risk & Control Self Assessment (RCSA)
  • Partnering with the business to support the safe and secure delivery of new technology, changes to our platform, products and features, and embedding of leading technology controls and risk practices 
  • Following up on risk events that happen at Monzo, partnering with teams to identify new risks, enhance controls and find appropriate solutions
  • Conducting in-depth reviews of different business areas with a focus on technology, information security and data management to identify and control new or changed risks, drive regulatory compliance and reporting on risk matters to oversight committees
  • Reviewing and assessing changes to technology processes that impact on our company risk profile
  • Promoting and helping embed a strong risk culture, making risk meaningful and relevant to everyone at Monzo. You will share best practice that it is easy for everyone to understand
  •  Leading a team to support on these responsibilities

🤩We’d love to hear from you if you are…

  • Someone with the practical engineering knowledge to hold their own in a debate with senior technology stakeholders across the business. In particular, someone who understands modern, cloud-based, modular IT architectures and agile ways of working. The individual has probably had 1st line experience in an engineering role on a platform like ours.
  • Someone who cares about control; understands how technology goes wrong, understands how the regulator thinks about Operational Resilience and Technology Outsourcing, and understands how to make very complicated platforms very stable and resilient.
  • Someone with the human skills to give feedback with kindness to sometimes challenging stakeholders.  And the human skills to lead a small team that has to rise to this challenge every week.
  • Someone who will get motivated by giving a great service to their risk colleagues, their tech colleagues and to Monzo at large.  Someone who can live with the fact that they don't write the code or take the bows, they enable and support the people who do.

📍This role can be based in our London or Cardiff offices, or be distributed working within the UK (with ad hoc meetings in London)
