The Community You Will JoinThe Payments organization at Airbnb enables people anywhere in the world to frictionlessly exchange money with easy to use payments services. It is a core strategy to fulfill Airbnb’s mission to belong anywhere. We are building a world-class payments platform that moves billions of dollars, in 191 countries, with 75+ currencies, through a complex ecosystem of payments partners. We build and maintain our own in-house global payments platform because no solution exists with the global reach needed. As the platform grows we’ll be adding new payment partners, global licenses, compliance and regulation controls, and building new payment experiences for our guests and hosts.
The Compliance organization, within Payments, ensures Airbnb is continuously compliant with all worldwide financial regulations across every transaction and for every participant on this platform. The Foundation organization within this group builds the critical platform architecture, tools, and frameworks to ensure that this can be done accurately, efficiently, and in real time for dozens of types of controls. The teams in the organization are highly autonomous and collaborative as they partner with other teams to provide a platform that can do this accurately and at scale.
The Difference You Will MakeThe Identity Foundation team builds and operates the critical flows and infrastructure for Compliance to track Users, Businesses, Financial Institutions, and other entities across our payments ecosystem. As the Engineering Manager, you’ll be leading an accomplished team to design and build the systems and solutions which are fundamental to the design for how Compliance, and Airbnb, will function for the next decade.
A Typical DayThis role requires heavy cross-collaboration with teams across other Platform organizations (Payments, Trust, Tax) and Product Management to inform and influence the long term architecture and how it is leveraged by our domains. Core aspects of the role include:
- Setting and communicating strategy and direction of the team to evolve identity data and systems to become central to all of Compliance
- Refining team processes and work divisions to enable effective prioritization, planning, and communication of the team’s sprint commitments
- Building relationships and working rhythms across peers and stakeholders in both India and the US
- Collaborating with organization Staff and Sr. Staff engineers to assist team in aligning architecture trade-offs
- Coaching and mentoring the team with empathy to do their best work while growing in their roles & responsibilities
- Creating deliberate plans and opportunities for addressing technical debt & quality, facilitating learning, and encouraging cultural engagement
- Participating in India site level and global initiatives to create a strong Payments organization
- 3-5+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager, with 9+ years of industry experience with a BS/Masters or 6+ years of industry experience with a PhD
- Experience leading a team to contribute effectively to large scale tech transformations across multiple teams and stakeholders
- Expertise proactively managing and communicating dependencies across parallel tracks of work
- Demonstrable experience creating expectations, coaching, and mentorship plans for ICs
- Comfortable independently establishing and validating priorities and direction in the absence of Product Management
- Track record of contributing to Technical Quality practices and roadmaps for the organization
- Experience managing distributed teams of varying experience levels
- Previous experience building Compliance programs and systems is a plus
This position is India - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager.
