About us

We’re here to make money work for everyone. For too long, banking has been needlessly complicated and not especially transparent.

We're doing things differently. We want to change how banking’s been done before and build a bank with everyone, for everyone. Our amazing community suggests features, test the app and give us constant feedback so we can build something everyone loves.

We're focused on solving problems, rather than selling financial products. We want to make the world better and change people's lives through Monzo.

Your day-to-day

Every word we write matters. From what’s in the app, to job ads (like this one), to error messages, to emails, to internal policies, to… you get the idea.

The Writing team isn’t responsible for writing every word though – we’re here to level up Monzo’s writing overall. We have a well-established tone of voice, and people here really care about making sure all our writing is consistently good and works hard for customers. It’ll be your job to keep that quality up through the writing you do. But you’ll also be a champion for great writing by proving the difference it makes, and helping other people to improve their own writing skills.

Our never-ending reason to exist is to improve the overall quality of writing at Monzo. That means a culture where care for language is the norm. Everyone, in every role, should understand how important it is to write in a clear, empathetic way, and they should all have the skills to do it. The outcome of that will be world-leading writing for customers. They’ll trust us because our writing is clear, effective and works hard for them.

You’ll join a busy internal creative studio made up of designers and writers. You’ll get together with the other writers pretty regularly to review and showcase work, collect feedback and insights from one another and generally just raise the bar for words at Monzo. And as we hinted at already, you’ll live and breathe our tone of voice, which is propped up by 3 guiding principles: straightforward kindness, everyday magic and warm wit.

You’ll start life here working in Wealth

Life as a Writer at Monzo can be nomadic, going where the business needs you most depending on what’s happening throughout the year. That doesn’t mean jumping around all the time. It just means that you won’t necessarily work in the same area of the business forever.

For this role, you’ll start out in our Wealth collective: a collection of product teams who work on things like savings and investments. That includes our new pensions feature and other exciting products we have coming up.

You’ll work closely with cross-functional squads of engineers, designers, marketers, researchers and so on to make it an amazing experience for existing customers, and bring new people on board.

A typical day could see you

  • collaborating with a Product Designer on some in-app screens
  • sitting in on user research sessions led by the Research team
  • writing error messages with input from engineers
  • editing legal wording alongside our in-house lawyers

Your home will be in Writing

Alongside the work you do on savings and investments, you’ll contribute to the Writing discipline. We’re always working on new resources, training and processes to make writing easier for everyone at Monzo.

Writing is part of the wider Marketing team but this role isn’t only about marketing. In fact, that’s a small part of the job. Your remit will be to improve the quality of the writing that touches your part of the business, inside Monzo and out.

This is for you if

  • you’re a dab hand at ‘content design’, ‘UX writing’, ‘product writing’
  • you’re allergic to useless jargon and over-complicated language
  • you’ve tackled writing in different industries (tech and finance are a bonus, savings and investments would be an even bigger bonus)
  • you know how to use data and research to guide your approach
  • you’re okay bouncing between tasks on a daily basis
  • you’re comfortable questioning a brief and helping people understand why your approach is the right one
  • you’ve done some training or coaching to help other people improve their writing, but this one’s not essential.

This isn’t for you if

  • it’s your first writing job – sorry, but we need someone to hit the ground running
  • you’re a journalist or ad writer
  • you’re only really excited by brand and marketing stuff – that isn’t the focus of this role
  • you prefer to spend most of your time working solo – writing here is a team sport and you’ll need to collaborate with everyone across the company
  • you like lots of top-down direction – you’ll be expected to decide which challenges you tackle with your team, and how to tackle them.

You’ll get

  • the chance to shape the role around what’s good for you, and us
  • very flexible working – we care about what you do, not the minutes you work or where you do it (we love to see our teammates in the office but you don’t have to come in if you don’t want to)
  • a whole load of benefits, including a personal training budget, health insurance, generous caregiving leave and more you can read about here: https://monzo.com/careers/

Please make sure you give us both a CV and a cover letter. This is a writing job after all; you should want to show us what you can do. A cover letter also helps us understand why you want the job vs a CV which often just tells us why you might be able to do the job.

The interview process

Our interview process involves 3 main stages (not including a recruiter call).

  • Initial call with the Hiring Manager (30mins)
  • Take home task (to be submitted within 7 days)
  • Recruiter call (15mins)
  • A pair of interviews via Google Meet (each interview lasting up to 60 minutes)
  • On average, the process takes around 3-4 weeks but we’ll try our best to work around your availability.

You’ll get the chance to speak to our Recruitment team at various points during your process but if you do have any specific questions or want to talk through reasonable adjustments ahead of or during application please let us us know by emailing core-hiring@monzo.com
