Overview:

The role involves leading the regional compliance team at Betsson Operations. This team is tasked with overseeing new license applications and ensuring that the company conducts its activities in adherence to all applicable license requirements. This responsibility encompasses serving as a bridge between the business and regulatory authorities. The compliance team is also responsible for implementing and overseeing policies, procedures, and guidelines for the entire organization.  

The Head of Regional Compliance will be in charge to manage a group of Regional Team Leads, each responsible for the compliance of a number of licences held by Betsson Group, supported by various compliance specialists. The chosen candidate will also be expected to follow internal business developments and implement company strategy by having a full understanding of the tasks being handled by the team members in order to guide both the business and the teams accordingly, including directing better ways of working.  

The Challenge: 

The Head of Regional Compliance is responsible to advise General Counsel on identified risks in relevant jurisdictions. He or she will be expected to work very closely with fellow team members namely the Deputy General Counsel and fellow legal business partners, the Head of Governmental & Regulatory Affairs and the Head of Compliance Governance & Data Privacy.   The latter function is responsible to provide support to the entire legal and compliance function in the areas of data privacy, anti-money laundering, responsible gaming and other horizontal matters in order to ensure a robust and uniform framework within which the business can operate. It is essential that the Head of Regional Compliance will work hand in hand with this function and together they will set up and implement the right environment, including the launch and management of a compliance framework and business-wide risk assessments.   

Conditions: 

The chosen candidate will be based in Malta and will report to General Counsel Betsson Operations, though this may alter depending on the person’s seniority and experience. Alongside being available to travel abroad from time to time.  

Responsibilities:

  • Interpretation and ownership of the various technical and non-technical requirements specific to each licence, with the support of the various compliance specialists 
  • Overseeing the implementation and management of technical and non-technical requirements by the different parts of the business;  
  • Overseeing the implementation of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements; 
  • Managing and assisting respective regional team leads in country-specific tasks as required;  
  • Having a clear understanding of the day-to-day work of the compliance team to be able to identify any possible gaps or risks which need to be addressed, and then address the same using a standardised approach across the team/business; 
  • Ensuring (or working with other stakeholders to ensure) that the findings from risk assessments/gap analyses are addressed by the business; 
  • Identifying training and development needs within the team and across the business; 
  • Managing relationships with external legal counsel or auditors as required; 
  • Overseeing developments within various markets and relevant interest groups together with team leads and the Head of Governmental & Regulatory Affairs and advising on the general line to take in relevant areas;  
  • Advising General Counsel on identified compliance risks on both the external and internal fronts 

Requirements: 

  • A law or other relevant degree from a reputable European University
  • At least 5 years’ experience in gambling compliance (whether in the private or public sector)
  • Knowledge or experience in project management 

You’re good at:  

  • Applying a pragmatic approach and offering suitable solutions to business while ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory requirements 
  • Prioritisation of tasks according to business needs 
  • Managing a team of managers and junior officers with a view to training and developing them while ensuring they are delivering the best service possible to the business 
  • Communicating both verbally and in writing in the English language and in business-related matters 

Extra Awesome: 

  • Gaming compliance experience in more than two regulated jurisdictions 
  • Experience in people management 
  • Additional compliance certificates gained throughout the years 
  • Knowledge of other languages
