Our Global Bank team is building the infrastructure behind SumUp’s digital banking experience. Within this team, the Transfers Gateway squad plays a critical role in how money moves in and out of SumUp accounts. We power millions of transactions across SEPA and UK payment schemes, integrate with third-party banking partners, and ensure fast, secure, and compliant payment processing. From fraud prevention to system monitoring, we’re focused on reliability at scale.

As a Backend Engineer in the Transfers Gateway team, you’ll work on distributed systems handling real-time payments at scale. You’ll build and maintain integrations with external banks and improve performance, security, and observability. You’ll collaborate with skilled engineers and cross-functional teams to support millions of small businesses across Europe.

Join us in our Vilnius Office. What You’ll Do

  • Build and maintain banking integrations for SEPA and UK payment schemes, enabling seamless, secure money movement for merchants across Europe.
  • Work on backend systems that handle millions of transactions, focusing on reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate closely with other cross-functional teams to deliver end-to-end features, from architectural design and coding to testing, monitoring, and incident resolution.
  • Participate in architectural discussions and contribute to technical roadmaps.
  • Improve test automation and monitoring to keep our systems running smoothly and catch errors early.
  • Learn about complex payment schemes and banking regulations, and use this knowledge to design cleaner, more reliable backend systems that are easier to maintain and scale.

You’ll Be Great for This Role If You Have

  • Professional experience as a Backend Engineer.
  • Proficiency in Golang in production environments.
  • Solid grasp of relational databases and working with cloud based infrastructure.
  • A good understanding of system architecture, design principles, data modeling, and API design (both RESTful and event-driven).
  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and version control systems like Git.
  • A track record of writing clean, maintainable, and well-structured code.
  • You’re curious and eager to learn more about the domain, always looking to improve your skills and work closely with the team to deliver the best results for our merchants.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Kotlin experience is a plus
  • Experience in fintech, payments, or banking.
  • Exposure to Kafka, PostgreSQL, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS and Grafana.
  • Experience with highly scalable, robust, and fault-tolerant systems.
  • Experience using observability tools to proactively detect and troubleshoot issues.

Compensation: Starting from 3,500 - 4583 EUR per month + 2000 EUR L&D p/a + Virtual Stock Options (based on your competencies relevant for the job).
