The Data Governance Lead Opportunity

We are looking for a Data Governance Lead to join the Enterprise Data Platform and Engineering team that has a passion for data and data related processes and systems, is detail oriented, and can translate the needs and value of data governance across all levels and domains in the enterprise.  This position will lead the development and implementation of key components of our enterprise data strategy, ensuring that our data assets are managed and governed effectively to support our data platform and our business partners that use data to make everyday decisions. You will work closely with stakeholders across various departments to establish policies, standards, and procedures under the pillars of data management, data discoverability, and data distribution to ensure data is used to its maximum potential in a secure and governed way.  In this role, you will set up and manage the enterprise data governance function from scratch, measure and improve data quality, own the enterprise data catalog, and communicate progress of our strategic goals to leadership. 

What you’ll be doing 

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive data governance framework, including policies, standards, and procedures for data management, quality, privacy, and security.
  • Develop measures to monitor data maturity, identifying gaps, and proposing solutions to improve ways of working with data.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders and domains to ensure data governance initiatives align with enterprise goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Define roles and responsibilities related to data governance and ensure clear accountability for stewardship of the company's data assets.
  • Implement and champion data quality and metadata management practices, including data classification, cleansing, and monitoring to ensure high-quality data across systems.
  • Identify areas of opportunity to automate data management processes and oversee implementation of technologies and workflows.
  • Manage and enhance the enterprise data catalog to improve the accessibility and understanding of data assets.
  • Monitor compliance with data governance policies and standards and report on performance metrics to leadership.
  • Lead the resolution of data-related issues and manage the escalation and approval process.
  • Stay informed of trends, new regulations, and best practices in data governance, data privacy, and data security and recommend improvements to the data management program and enterprise data platform and processes.

What you’ll bring to the role

  • 8+ years' experience in a data related field
  • 5+ years' hands-on data management and governance experience
  • Proven experience building a data governance program from scratch with a strong understanding of data governance principles and best practices
  • Familiarity with data privacy and security laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, FEDRAMP) and industry standards
  • Familiarity with modern data architecture
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and collaboration skills to work effectively across various teams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail
  • Experience with SCRUM operating model and tracking work via a tool such as Jira
  • Experience working with a data catalog such as Collibra, Alation, or Data.World
  • Industry certifications such as CISSP/CISM/CISA
  • BS in CS, MIS, related technical degree

Below is the annual base salary range for candidates located in California, Colorado, New York and Washington. Your actual base salary will depend on factors such as your skills, qualifications, experience, and work location. In addition, Okta offers equity (where applicable), bonus, and benefits, including health, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), flexible spending account, and paid leave (including PTO and parental leave) in accordance with our applicable plans and policies. The annual base salary range for this position for candidates located in California (excluding San Francisco Bay Area), Colorado, New York, and Washington is between:$112,000—$186,000 USD The annual base salary range for this position for candidates located in the San Francisco Bay area is between: $139,000—$209,000 USD
