Everyone belongs at OVO
At OVO, we are on a mission to solve one of humanity's biggest challenges, the climate crisis. And we know it takes all of us to change the world. That's why we need a diverse group of people from all gender identities, ethnicities, ages, sexual orientations, life experiences and backgrounds to join us.
Teamworking for the planet
Everything we do here spins around Plan Zero. So, naturally, the team you’ll be joining plays a gigantic role in making that happen. Here’s how:
OVO is a heavily data-driven organisation with an ever-growing demand for excellent quality, reliable and accurate data to power our business: our Senior Leadership team prioritising investment, our Product teams resolving the best ways to serve and delight our customers, or our Data Science teams building ML products to help customers on their journey to net zero, with exciting new AI technologies using smart meter, solar panel or electric vehicle charger usage data.
The Data Platform is a key strategic component in OVO’s ability to use data confidently at scale. As one of the Product Managers in the team, you will have ownership of the Data Warehouse and the Data Discovery platforms. These together enable consistency and pace in OVO’s Analytics, Data Science and Engineering teams, empowering them to build high quality, trusted data products efficiently.
You will be responsible for engaging your users and understanding the problem space, working with the Engineering team to continually improve the applications you own, and identify and unlock further value. Together with the other Data Platform PMs, you will ensure the success of the overall Platform, by building a community of user-advocates around it, and enabling a culture of data throughout OVO, as we strive to build knowledge of and trust in our extensive data assets.
This role in a nutshell:
As the Product Manager for the Data Warehousing & Discovery team you will:
- Own the Vision: you will be responsible for leading the long term vision, and driving the quarterly roadmap for data discovery and observability at OVO
- Know your Customer: you will build strong relationships with collaborators and users from across OVO teams to represent their voices into the rest of your team
- Foster a Data Culture: you will encourage data owners from across OVO to continually enhance the overall maturity of data, to enable the entire business to benefit
- Align, Prioritise and Measure: you will use goals and landmarks and agile methodologies to break down work with your team, ship value to the business via continuous delivery, and continually measure outcomes against your team and business goals
- Collaborate and Share: you will work closely with other Product Managers across OVO to ensure alignment of work to minimise dependency and maximise pace
Your key outcomes will be:
- Enable Analysts, Engineers and Data Scientists to find, use and trust the data they need, as easily as possible.
- Evolve our view of where our most important data is, based on the current and upcoming demands of the business.
- Work closely with the data producer community, building greater utility, trust, and reliability in our most critical data assets.
- Through all of this, help OVO to drive greater customer satisfaction, while helping them on their journey to net zero.
Systems: BigQuery, Datahub, Monte Carlo, Jira
You’ll be a successful Data Product Manager at OVO if you…
- Have a passion for data and an analytical mentality
- Can take in a lot of disparate information and develop a clear rationale for your decisions
- Feel at home collaborating with engineers and business leaders alike
- Enjoy making sense of complex domains and sharing that understanding
- Can show creativity in solving problems, and an understanding that the most complicated isn’t always the best
- Have an ability to explain technical concepts simply to collaborators at all levels
- Know when it’s best to write something, say something, or show something to communicate your ideas
- Recognise that everyone has their own strengths and seek ways to bring out the best in yourself and others, as part of a diverse and inclusive organisation
- Understand and embrace the highs and lows of teamwork in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to adjust to new priorities effectively
And these would be a bonus!
- Experience of using and building data platform products, perhaps as part of a Data Mesh implementation
- Knowledge of DataHub or Monte Carlo, or similar products in the Modern Data Stack
- Experience of cloud platforms. Google Cloud Platform would be ideal
- Familiarity with BigQuery, Looker, Tableau, or similar tools
- Conversant in data quality and metadata management principles, its importance to the business and its complexity
You won’t like this role if you…
- Don’t like talking to people. You will need to engage with users from across the business and a variety of roles and levels to ensure your product is having the greatest impact.
- Don’t like change. OVO moves fast, and the Data Platform underpins the entire business, so there is a constant stream of new items to build at pace.
