Director of Communications | Bankrate
As the Director of Communications, you will drive Bankrate’s external communications strategy and elevate our presence across financial media, consumer news, and the broader fintech landscape. You will own day-to-day PR strategy, media relations, thought leadership programs, and external messaging — ensuring Bankrate consistently shows up as a trusted, authoritative voice in personal finance.
In this role, you’ll lead and develop a multidisciplinary communications team spanning PR strategy, media operations, production editing, on-camera subject matter experts, and content-driven communications. You will partner closely with brand, editorial, legal, and senior leadership to ensure cohesive narratives, strong spokesperson performance, and high-impact earned media coverage. This is a highly collaborative, highly visible role designed for a communications leader who is both strategic and hands-on, and who thrives in fast-moving, news-driven environments.
*This role is open to remote or hybrid candidates (East coast preference), with hybrid being central to our New York, NY or Charlotte area offices. Must be able to work Eastern Standard Time hours.
What You’ll Do:
- Develop and execute Bankrate's external communications strategy in alignment with brand and business priorities.
- Shape key messaging frameworks, storylines, and media narratives rooted in financial expertise and market trends.
- Strengthen Bankrate’s position as a trusted voice in personal finance, consumer money management, and fintech.
- Build and maintain relationships with top-tier reporters, editors, producers, and industry analysts.
- Secure earned media coverage across TV, digital, print, podcasts, and events.
- Lead reactive and proactive PR efforts, including issues response, data-driven storytelling, and reputation management.
- Integrate thought leadership into broader brand campaigns and editorial initiatives.
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of communications specialists across production editing, PR strategy, media ops, and content communications.
- Partner with design, video, and editorial teams to ensure cohesive and on-brand execution across all channels.
- Monitor industry and competitive trends to refine strategy and identify opportunities.
What We’re Looking For:
- 8–10+ years of experience in communications, PR, media relations, or strategic storytelling, including leadership experience.
- Demonstrated success owning or significantly contributing to communications strategy for a fintech, financial services, or complex consumer brand.
- Strong media relationships across national, consumer, and business press; proven track record of generating consistent earned media.
- Experience supporting on-camera talent, prepping spokespeople, and managing media-facing subject matter experts.
- Exceptional writing, messaging, and narrative development skills.
- Knowledge of PR tools such as Cision, TVEyes, Google Suite, Asana, or other project management and media monitoring platforms.
Compensation:
This range reflects total cash compensation, which may include base salary only or base salary plus target bonus, depending on the role. Where eligible, equity may also be offered separately and not included below. Actual compensation varies based on location, experience, and qualifications.
- Total Cash Compensation Range: $140,000 – $200,000 per year
*New York City (hybrid) Total Cash Compensation Range: $175,000 – $250,000 per year
