Engineering Lead - Account Experience

Full Time
London, UK

Wise is one of the fastest growing companies in Europe and we’re on a mission: to make money without borders the new normal. We’ve got 15 million customers across the globe and we’re growing. Fast.

Current banking systems don't let us send, spend or receive money across borders easily. Or quickly. Or cheaply.

So, we’re building a new one and we’re looking for a talented Engineering Lead to join the mission.

Wise has already pioneered new ways for people to transfer money across borders and currencies. Our customers can also manage their hard-earned money with the world’s first platform to offer true multi-currency banking.

The team you’ll be working with: Account Experience team

The Account Squad aims to build the world’s most international account, saving customers time and money wherever they live, so they can spend and send like a local, wherever they may be in the world.

Account experience is a large multi-platform team which sits within the squad and is responsible for making sure using Wise is easy and delightful. Our primary focus is the homepage that customers see when they are logged in. Today it provides an overview of their holdings and activities. Tomorrow it should be tailored to each customer based on their usage of the product. It should make it easy to perform their most important tasks, while suggesting features that may help them get more out of their wise account.

The team also maintains some core infrastructure of the account, such as:

  • The backend service decides what is shown on the logged in homescreen.
  • The backend infrastructure storing the history of all activities done by a customer
  • The backend infrastructure powering notifications and email sending

Given the above, we also act as a sort of “product platform” team - we enable other teams to communicate effectively with customers and to level up their experiences.

Team vision and main challenges

Vision:

  • Tailor the home screen to make it more relevant and convenient.
  • Improve the quality of existing experiences and products, bringing the different ways to use Wise into a cohesive whole.
  • Develop features to view and summarise your account usage as a customer - showing customers how much they’ve earned in returns and as income, how much they’ve transferred, spent (as well as where) and importantly how much they have saved, to demonstrate the value of Wise.

Challenges:

  • Wise offers many different products in many different markets. Tailoring the experience and developing new features requires diving deep into various domains and markets to do it right and in a compliant manner.
  • Keeping our infrastructure scalable and resilient, as well as providing a good developer experience to other teams that need to build on top of it
What does it take?
  • Being responsible for the overall health and productivity of the engineers within your team
  • Being ready to roll your sleeves up and code sometimes; get involved in the entire software development process
  • Supporting engineers and providing feedback on tech: both code and architecture
  • Helping your team to make data-driven decisions
  • Having an overview of what’s happening across the organisation and thinking about engineering as a whole
Is that you?
  • Experience working with Java, Spring framework, asynchronous message queues and have worked with microservices architecture – this is essential
  • Experience leading, coaching and mentoring high performing teams, building development plans and setting personal goals for engineers in your teams
  • Comfortable working on big challenges and taking full ownership of the customer journey
  • Experience building and designing scalable and performing systems
  • Comfortable with SQL databases, optimisation and transaction
  • A passion for international finance, foreign exchange and payment systems

…but don’t worry we don’t expect you to know everything!

What does success look like?
  • You’ll have found your place in our mission by understanding how to drive engineering solutions and suggesting future challenges
  • You’ll understand our customers and the impact our product makes in their lives
  • You’ll make contributions to the wider engineering goals of the company
  • You’ll inspire a team environment where ideas are shared and openness is valued
  • You’ll help us scale-up and build a world class money product that impacts millions of customers
What you get back:
  • The ability to choose your own path to success - you’ll have the freedom to define the vision
  • The freedom to have real impact
  • The opportunity to inspire teams
  • A fun work environment with social activities and events

We offer a salary range of 95,000-130,000GBP annual + an RSU package vesting over a period of 4 years.
