Public Policy Intern, Policy Central

Full Time

Airbnb was born in 2007 when two Hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 4 million Hosts who have welcomed more than 1 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, Hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way.

The community you will join:

Airbnb is seeking a Public Policy Intern to join the Policy Central team for the 2024 Summer Intern Program from May 20, 2024 - August 9, 2024.

The Policy Central team serves the Regional Policy teams through projects and processes to make their work more scalable, consistent and strategic. Part of this effort is to design strategies that are tactically deployed by the Regional Policy Teams. In addition, Policy Central is responsible for knowledge management and other systemic organization that makes our collective work more efficient and effective. Policy Central is a senior team with significant cross-functional connections and institutional memory that is set up to respond dynamically to the evolving needs of the broader Policy team and the company.

As an intern, you’ll get first-hand experience on the work the Public Policy team at Airbnb achieves.

The difference you will make:

Policy is in need of a "storyteller" who can help provide other internal teams with a better/more narrative description of our work, including but not limited to, trends, strategies, learnings, successes, and shortcomings. Potential projects include  the opportunity to draft a "Year in Policy Report." You can expect to create versions for external consumption as well, providing you the opportunity  to learn how to communicate to different stakeholders such as the Communications team.

You’ll also have the opportunity to think creatively about an “Airbnb history” series that captures institutional knowledge about our past (particularly the pre-Pandemic business). This project could involve oral history (interviews) as well as a written narrative of Global Policy efforts dating back to 2013, and a process for current Airbnb employees to add to the historical record and allow current/future employees to easily search the library of historical records to find insights/learnings.

A typical day:

As an intern, you’ll be integrated into a team where you’ll contribute to challenging projects. Your manager, team, and our incredible employee community will strive to be superhosts to you during the summer. We provide the support, mentorship, fun, and real world experience needed to accelerate your learning and make a real impact on our product, as Airbnb revolutionizes connection, belonging, and travel. You can expect to:

  • Own and complete a capstone project from beginning to end
  • Collaborate with multiple team members to achieve project milestones
  • Communicate with stakeholders across different teams to provide project updates
  • Seek and provide feedback throughout the internship
  • Actively participate in and contribute to the Public Policy team and broader Airbnb community

Your expertise:

  • Current Bachelors/Masters student, recent college graduate, and non-traditional candidate (do not have a 4-year college degree) with less than 1 year of full-time, professional experience in Public Policy
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, detail-oriented and organized
  • Strong research skills for effective information comprehension and synthesis
  • Demonstrate strategic thinking to contribute innovative ideas and solutions
  • Exceptional organizational abilities to manage tasks efficiently and meet deadlines
  • Passion for the Airbnb mission; experience with the platform is a plus!
  • Work authorization for employment in the United States is required (CPT/OPT is accepted) - visa sponsorship is unavailable

Nice to haves:

  • Previous experience in public relations, political analysis, or government relations
  • Familiarity with Tableau and Superset for data visualization
  • For non-traditional candidates, 3-4 years of professional experience

How to apply:

In addition to your resume, you will be asked to answer 3 short-answer questions and provide a writing sample. The writing sample should be no more than 2-4 pages long. We recommend providing a writing sample that is related to public policy, public relation, political analysis, or the government.
