Senior Banking and Payments Manager - UK and Europe
Your mission:
We are looking for an experienced future leader in payments to help Wise build the best way to move money all over the world.
This role sits in the Banking and Expansion team working alongside product teams at Wise which are responsible for the growth and expansion of Wise’s global payment rails. This role will have a particular focus on bank to bank payment systems utilising SWIFT and correspondent banks as well as direct payment system access in the UK and Europe (such as Target-2, CHAPS, SEPA systems and more).
You will:
- Lead both commercial and technical/operational discussions with global correspondent banks to enable Wise to be the fastest, cheapest and most convenient way to move money all over the world. This includes owning detailed product level optimisation (fees, deductions, partner routing, payment speed etc) as well as commercial and regulatory optimisation
- Work with our product and engineering teams to help build the best payment rails in the world including building direct payment system participation in European payment systems. This will include helping design and optimising future bank partner selection and leading central bank/payment system discussions on a technical level if needed
- Own key bank and payment partner relationships, collaborating between the bank partner and internal cross-functional teams such as Wises’ Product, Engineering, Platform, Compliance, Payment Operations and Legal to ensure bank partner relationships remain compliant and competitive
- Monitor and improve our payment product economics (such as bank charges, intermediary deductions etc) and capabilities to ensure we offer the most sustainable and competitive service in the market.
- Work closely with our product and compliance teams to ensure our partnerships and payment systems remain compliant with all future regulations and can take advantage of any new technical changes quickly (ISO2022, SWIFT GPI etc)
- Align closely with Government Relations and Policy teams to review and apply deep understanding of current and proposed payments and financial services regulations to support further expansion of direct payment system access to non-bank financial institutions such as Wise. This may also involve participating in industry working groups/conferences to represent Wise externally in the global payments industry
A bit about you
- 7+ years experience in payments, transaction banking, correspondent banking or in a related financial technology role
- Have an excellent understanding of how cross border payments, SWIFT, correspondent banks and domestic payment systems work at a technical and operational level and can translate this into the best way to build a world-leading cross border payments product
- A good working-level of knowledge on payments connectivity channels such as SWIFT, APIs, and ISO 20022/MT messaging to help drive product improvements
- A strong communicator both internally and externally across multiple seniority levels with the ability to communicate technical payment concepts to audiences of varying technical payments knowledge
- Able to get stuff done, lead major projects independently and aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty to deliver what’s needed. This includes demonstrated ability to align closely with product, engineering, compliance and operations teams with a solid track record of execution and go into technical level detail when needed
- A good understanding of the regulatory and anti-financial crime environment that a payment services firm such as Wise operates in
- Familiar with how financial institutions work and their decision makers. You’re excellent at managing those relationships and are constantly creating opportunities to improve them. You are an outstanding negotiator and can create new opportunities with bank partners and central banks
- Feel comfortable making hard decisions and bringing others on board, both with internal and external stakeholders.
- Comfortable with using and analysing customer and payments data independently to form and support arguments on prioritising product build
