Name of Job: Senior Counsel

Location: Wayfair Bengaluru Office

Category: Legal

We are looking for a dynamic lawyer to join Wayfair as our first lawyer in India in our rapidly-growing Bengaluru office. You’ll be a true generalist with broad responsibilities, owning and driving elements of our function and roadmap. You will also work closely with the business and the broader legal team on highly collaborative, cross-functional projects of all shapes and sizes.

The ideal candidate will provide expert legal advice and guidance on a wide range of legal matters. This position offers an opportunity to work closely with various departments within the organisation and contribute to the company's strategic initiatives.

A successful candidate will be hard-working, proactive, and entrepreneurial. You will be a problem solver and able to build consensus and apply sound, pragmatic judgement in ambiguous situations. As our first lawyer in India, you will be facing many challenges that are novel for the company.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary legal advisor for Wayfair's operations in India, providing comprehensive legal support to all business units and functions. You will be the bridge between the business on the ground and the legal team in the US and Europe.
  • Learn our business and industry, and develop and deploy a calibrated risk-based approach to complex and often uncertain legal issues. Find pragmatic solutions that are proportionate to the issue at hand.
  • Play a leadership role in our organisation; driving change, mentoring and coaching others, fostering inclusivity and influencing the broader business.
  • Ensure Wayfair's operations in India comply with all applicable laws and regulations, including data privacy, consumer protection, and intellectual property.
  • Select and manage outside counsel where needed; hold external advisors to a high bar. You will manage the relationship between outside counsel and our internal teams to drive cost-effective and business-oriented solutions.
  • Advise internal stakeholders on day-to-day and out of the ordinary legal matters.
  • Liaise with external counsel on litigation and to strategize with the counsel to obtain the best possible outcome for Wayfair.
  • Lead employment law matters.

Required Skills:

  • LLB or higher degree from an accredited university in India.
  • Minimum 5 years post-qualification in India. In-house experience at a multinational company is preferred but not required.
  • Excellent analytical, writing and communication skills, with the ability to navigate a large organisation and collaborate cross-functionally.
  • Willingness to master new and unfamiliar areas of practice. Legal knowledge related to any of the following is a plus: employment law, commercial contracts, corporate, litigation and e-commerce.
  • Project management experience and the ability to prioritise, multi-task, meet deadlines and maintain flexibility in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Proactive, self-starter with a strong work ethic, a demonstrated ability to handle a demanding workload and willingness to roll-up sleeves.
