MongoDB seeks an experienced engineering leader to manage our Corporate Engineering team. You will oversee and deliver internal tools programs and manage stakeholders across the company’s many business units. You are experienced at managing highly technical engineers and engineering management, you have a track record for innovation, and you understand how to staff for success. You will manage a global, growing team of approximately thirty-five team members.

You have seen what “good” looks like at scale in terms of both processes and technology. You are a creative thinker, you are collaborative, you are a problem solver and you find ways to continuously improve. You challenge the status quo, and do not accept the answer, “because it has always been this way,” while supporting executives in making challenging and complex decisions that enable MongoDB to achieve strategic objectives.  

This role can be based out of our New York City, Palo Alto, or San Francisco offices or remotely in the United States.

Our ideal candidate:
  • Has 10+ years experience developing internal tools, enterprise applications, and integrations for use by internal business users
  • Has 5+ years experience leading large globally distributed engineering teams of 50+, and experience managing and growing engineering leaders
  • Has 5+ years of managing managers
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders, including senior executives
  • Has experience building fault-tolerant microservice architectures
  • Has expertise with cloud platforms, e.g. AWS, GCP, and CI/CD strategies and tooling, e.g. k8s, Docker, Drone; Leadership of Mulesoft engineering teams is a plus
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or a relevant field; advanced degree preferred.
Position Expectations:
  • Design, build, deliver and run internal tools, enterprise applications, and integration services that are reliable, scalable, secure, and observable
  • Provide leadership for, and engage in the attraction, development, and retention of a high caliber staff with diverse capabilities; Develop successors and talent pools for key roles; Foster a work culture that promotes a cooperative, inclusive, innovative, and team-oriented environment. Oversee diversity and inclusion activities
  • Establish strategic vision, goals, and objectives for the Corporate Engineering function, consistent with MongoDB’s overarching strategic direction, goals, and objectives; Establish policies and provide effective oversight and communications to ensure staff can complete the mission and activities performed within the business areas and set expectations appropriately
  • Inspect the work of managers and senior individual contributors to ensure that plans remain on track and that technical debt is being paid down
  • Work with stakeholders across the company to understand their business needs and develop product descriptions that can be translated into highly observable engineering efforts
  • Review functional specifications and scoping documents for proposed projects and ensure accurate sizing and timing estimates
  • Investigate gaps and limitations in existing tooling and develop well-thought-out long-term solutions
  • Have lots of fun doing all of the above things
Success Measures:
  • In three months you will have familiarized yourself with the many functions of Technical Operations, make regular contributions to product, scope, and spec documents, and help to resolve incidents; You have assessed the team members, and ensured that all personnel have development plans
  • In six months you will have established yourself as the face of Corporate Engineering, and reviewed roadmaps and deliverables with senior leaders and stakeholders across our application portfolio 
  • In a year you will have made sizable contributions to the company’s topmost strategic initiatives through superior staffing and careful weighing of quality and speed to achieve the company’s business objectives

MongoDB’s base salary range for this role is posted below. Compensation at the time of offer is unique to each candidate and based on a variety of factors such as skill set, experience, qualifications, and work location. Salary is one part of MongoDB’s total compensation and benefits package. Other benefits for eligible employees may include: equity, participation in the employee stock purchase program, flexible paid time off, 20 weeks fully-paid gender-neutral parental leave, fertility and adoption assistance, 401(k) plan, mental health counseling, access to transgender-inclusive health insurance coverage, and health benefits offerings. Please note, the base salary range listed below and the benefits in this paragraph are only applicable to U.S.-based candidates.

MongoDB’s base salary range for this role in the U.S. is:$185,000—$363,000 USD
