Be part of the team building SURO – Europe’s first EUR-backed stablecoin designed for merchants.

At SumUp, we believe small businesses are the heartbeat of Europe’s economy. Our mission has always been to help them thrive. Now we’re taking the next leap: SURO – a stablecoin that will make payments instant, cheaper, and fully compliant.

This is a rare chance to shape the technical foundations of a product at the intersection of fintech, crypto, and regulation — backed by a profitable business serving 4M merchants across 35+ markets.

What’s the opportunity?

We’re looking for a Staff Engineer who thrives on building from scratch, loves mentoring others, and still enjoys rolling up their sleeves in production code. As SURO grows, so will you: this role has a clear path to Engineering Manager once the team reaches scale.

This is a newly created role, designed to bring internal technical leadership to a high-priority project. It’s fast-moving, complex, and full of potential - perfect for someone who thrives in ambiguous, high-impact environments.

What you’ll do
  • Build from zero: Lead technical discovery and MVP build-out for SURO, coding daily in Kotlin or Go.
  • Architect for trust: Design high-SLA, service-oriented systems that integrate with our ledger, reconciliation, and treasury platforms.
  • Grow a team: Start with a small cross-functional squad (2–3 backend engineers + PM), then hire and coach as SURO scales.
  • Raise the bar: Embed reliability, security, and observability from day one.
  • Bridge domains: Partner with Product, Finance, Legal, and Banking to deliver features that meet regulatory standards.
  • Shape the roadmap: Define the engineering path forward and, over time, step into Engineering Manager while staying hands-on.

What makes you a great fit:

  • Relevant experience shipping production software in payments, PSP, acquiring, or digital wallets.
  • Deep backend expertise in Kotlin or Go, with solid command of cloud-native patterns (microservices, event-driven systems, CI/CD).
  • Proven success designing systems that meet strict SLAs and transaction integrity requirements.
  • A builder’s mindset: comfortable with uncertainty, rapid prototyping, and iterating in greenfield environments.
  • Natural leadership traits: mentoring, clear communication, ability to grow a team (even if you haven’t held a formal EM title).
  • Bonus: familiarity with blockchain concepts or experience shipping crypto/stablecoin products.
Why join SumUp?
  • Shape the future: Own the core foundations of a first-of-its-kind stablecoin for European merchants.
  • Grow with us: Transition from Staff Engineer into Engineering Manager once the product and team scale.
  • Impact at scale: Your work will touch millions of daily transactions across Europe.

Perks & Benefits

  • €2,000 yearly learning & development budget
  • Participate in our VSOP (Virtual Stock Option Plan)
  •  25+ days of paid leave, plus 1-month sabbatical every 3 years
  • Childbirth/adoption bonuses
  • Co-sponsored Multisport card & wellness perks
  • Monthly meal vouchers and flexible benefits
  • Comprehensive health & life insurance
  • An inclusive, values-driven team that celebrates diversity
If you’re an engineer who wants to build something truly new, bridge fintech and crypto, and grow into leadership while staying close to the code — this is your chance. Apply now and let’s shape the future of European payments together.
