Join the team as Twilio’s next Staff, Software Engineer (L4) – Messaging API.

Who we are & why we’re hiring

Twilio powers real-time business communications and data solutions that help companies and developers worldwide build better applications and customer experiences.

Although we're headquartered in San Francisco, we have presence throughout South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. We're on a journey to becoming a global company that actively opposes racism and all forms of oppression and bias. At Twilio, we support diversity, equity & inclusion wherever we do business.

About the job

This position is needed to build and enhance the Messaging APIs, ensuring its reliability, availability, and scalability to provide a seamless and trusted experience to our customers.

As a part of the Messaging API team, you will own the gateway services into the Messaging Platform. From sending messages to retrieving logs, you will work with various tech stacks to provide a consistent customer and developer experience that abstracts away the complexity of the underlying Messaging Platform. You will play a key role in shaping the future of our APIs, delivering new and innovative experiences to our growing customer base.

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll:

  • Operate independently and self-sufficiently, while also excelling in team collaboration and leadership when appropriate.
  • Design and implement automated solutions to assess service health trends in order to minimize customer disruption and enhance overall system performance.
  • Build internal tools that streamline software development processes across the organization in order to improve developer velocity and decrease engineering overhead.
  • Engage in all stages of the software development lifecycle, including project planning, designing, coding, testing, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Use a variety of testing methodologies to ensure performance, stability, and reliability in our code and products (unit, integration, cluster, end-to-end, performance, fault tolerance).
  • Deploy code to the cloud; learn and use AWS, K8s, CI/CD, Front-end frameworks, and Back-end service building techniques.
  • Participate in the refinement of the team’s Product Backlog, estimating work and other Agile ceremonies as a strategic voice to the team.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to align goals and deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Foster a positive team environment to promote collective growth.
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers.
Qualifications

Not all applicants will have skills that match a job description exactly. Twilio values diverse experiences in other industries, and we encourage everyone who meets the required qualifications to apply. While having “desired” qualifications make for a strong candidate, we encourage applicants with alternative experiences to also apply. If your career is just starting or hasn't followed a traditional path, don't let that stop you from considering Twilio. We are always looking for people who will bring something new to the table!

Required:

  • 7+ years of experience with a proven track record of designing, building, and deploying large, scalable distributed systems and microservices architectures. Expert in utilizing asynchronous communication patterns like Kafka or similar tools to achieve optimal performance and decoupling.
  • Highly independent and curious, demonstrating efficiency and proactivity in utilizing available resources and thinking creatively to find solutions.
  • Proficiency in Java or other object oriented languages, including advanced concepts like concurrency, multi-threading, and performance optimization. Experience with at least one framework in which you can be called an expert.
  • Strong understanding of relational databases like MySQL, including query optimization and data modeling principles.
  • Practical experience with cloud platforms like AWS, including containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and collaboration skills, able to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. Strong ability to manage and resolve conflict - you have the ability to listen, present, and question effectively.
  • Schedule: ability to work non-standard, on-call rotation weekend and holiday hours.

Desired:

  • Experience developing for AWS services.
  • Prior knowledge and experience with Dropwizard or Spring Boot applications.
