The Team

The Business Intelligence (BI) team is responsible for calculating and reporting on the key metrics that help gauge company performance. We work closely with both the senior executive team and operational leaders to build an integrated metric framework, which gives us insight into the health of the company’s core activities. This is an ever-evolving process that requires a deep understanding of the operations of each department and the ability to measure the most important leading and lagging indicators of performance.

Job Summary:

The BI Analyst Intern will be responsible for working with technical/functional teams to understand their data & reporting needs and delivering required information using suitable optimized solutions. You will work with technical/functional SMEs to document business requirements, convert them to reporting specifications, and develop reporting processes to derive required metrics. You will also work with BI developers to modernize the data platform to make the data more findable, interoperable, and reusable.

The BI Analyst Intern will design & build data artifacts (e.g. SQL scripts, data models, ETL) to enhance data accessibility and scalability for the reporting needs of the company. Beyond ensuring the validity and timeliness of data, you will also work on key reports and dashboards delivered to functional leadership to measure the company’s health and progress against key goals.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The primary focus will be on building data engineering solutions & reporting dashboards by modernizing and streamlining the data platform and collaborating with various technical/functional teams within the organization to fulfill their reporting needs.
  • Work with technical/functional leads to gather reporting requirements, document business logic, prepare technical specifications, and confirm/validate data to assess business needs.
  • Design, construct, and sustain BI data models to enhance data accessibility and scalability
  • Develop tools & pipelines to collect, clean, and transform data modes to feed reporting
  • Minimize technical debt and focus on reproducibility (keep docs/code up to date, prepare/design for future use cases)
  • Use data quality best practices to ensure the integrity of the data being used and the thoroughness of results 
  • Design and monitor alerts on data fluctuations and deviations to proactively catch and address data issues and anomalies.
  • Support and contribute to the BI team knowledge base by focusing on documentation, data mapping, and delivery methods to better design and build metrics that enhance our analytical capabilities.
  • Help assess the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources, data points, and data-gathering techniques

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to perform efficient data analysis, data modeling, and database development for reports/visualization.
  • Comfortable working with large data sets across multiple sources, conducting validation, and ensuring data accuracy & relevance.
  • Proficiency in technical skills including SQL development, writing complex queries, and ETL concepts for data extraction
  • Well-versed with data visualization techniques including familiarity with Tableau, Looker & similar tools
  • Meticulous attention to detail and an intuitive understanding of query optimization and high-performance data pipelines.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills to collaborate with multiple stakeholders
  • Demonstrates UserTesting’s values through work product and within day-to-day team interactions.

  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.

Good-to-have skills: 

  • Familiarity with Python, and dBT for data analysis and modeling
  • A good understanding of cloud database services like Snowflake, and AWS including familiarity with dimension modeling & data warehouse concepts would be a value add.
  • Understanding of statistical methods for data analysis and evaluating key reporting metrics

Education and Experience:

  • Enrolled in Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Business or Information Systems type of equivalent degree.
  • Previous technical internship experience(s) or certifications, if applicable
